Obituary of Joseph F. Mallare

Joseph F. Mallare, 94, of Jamestown passed away Friday, March 11, 2016 in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. A Jamestown native, he was born September 28, 1921, the son of the late Antone and Sarah Provenzano Mallare. Joe was a 1939 graduate of Celoron High School and went on to Ohio State University for two years where he played trumpet in the Ohio State Marching Band from 1941 until 1943 before enlisting into active duty with the U.S. Army Air Force Reserve during WWII. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in March 1944, was promoted to First Lieutenant in July 1944, and was promoted to Captain in 1947. Joe served as a B-17 Bomber Navigator in the 385th Bomb Group with the Eighth Air Force in the European theater. He was awarded six Air Medals for acts of heroism, earned the Distinguished Flying Cross after his 30th mission, and flew a total of 35 missions. Joe was re-called to active duty in 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict, and retired as a Captain in the Reserves. Joe graduated from Ohio State University with a business administration degree in 1954, and continued his avocation as trumpeter-extraordinaire with many professional gigs and with the Jamestown Municipal Band where he served as its manager for 20 years. Prior to retirement in 1980, Joe worked for the Social Security Administration. He was a communicant of Holy Apostles Parish St John Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus; a member of Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion; John W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW; Lakewood Rod and Gun Club; and the Marco Polo Club. To honor our veterans, Joe played taps at numerous military services over the years. He will be remembered as a true patriot and as a real gentleman. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Marie Mangine Mallare; several nieces and nephews including, Mark (Sandy Ross) Mallare of Columbia, MD; Maureen Mallare (Jon) Stahley of Bemus Point, NY; Ronald (Teresa Phillippi) Mallare of Leawood, KS; Brian (Kathleen Erickson) Mallare of Millersville, MD; Kathleen Mallare (Stan) Collver of Jamestown; Marcia Mallare (Drew) Robbins of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; and Bradley (Lynn Zuchowski) Mallare of Beavercreek, OH. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Vincent Mallare who died August 6, 2004. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday in Holy Apostles Parish, St John Catholic Church 270 Newton Ave Jamestown, NY. The Rev. Dennis W. Mende, pastor will be celebrant. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home where full military honors will be presented at 1:15 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
