I just learned of Steve's passing and needless to say it was a shock. All the memories came flooding back of us as kids in scouts and later playing music together, or just hanging out at the Swanson house on Broadhead. Steve went on to surpass me in his musical endeavors, a passion to which he remained devoted throughout his life. I was always delighted to hear he got to do what he loved. I last saw Steve about 27 years ago in Jamestown on one evening when his band was playing a local club. He graciously acknowledged my presence in the audience and briefly talked about our fledgling days playing rock music. I am deeply saddened to hear of his loss and will pray for the loved ones he left behind. God bless you, Steve.

i was gifted with the opportunity to play with the Beamus Bay Pops last Labour Day. I had a chance to speak to with Steve at the feast afterwards and was struck with his profound humility, love of music and respect that Steve had for his fellow musicians. Beamus will never be the same. I hope this year's concert will include a tribute to this fine human being. The Big Band Celestial just acquired a new member of the highest order. For all eternity he will strut the stage of the Gig Never Ending.

Steve was so generous of spirit, always ready with a hug, always genuinely interested in talking and catching up, always connecting, always singing, always so present. I am so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. Steve was so very happy that we asked him to play at our MUSIC ON THE PIER-Summer Concert Series 2016. He called me and said he was going to get checked out (I will respect and not get into details) and that he had to cancel many gigs due to his upcoming treatment. He said he wouldn't let his GOOD FRIEND, Mayor Willie Rosas down and that if HE couldn't play he'd have Steve Harris sit in for him BUT that he'd be there to listen if he couldn't play. Many of you know that Mayor Rosas also played with him in the band BLUZE INN. He will be sadly missed by all of us. We truly have lost a loving friend and a great talented musician. Steve Swanson, you RIP...! I know you WILL be with us July 7, 2016. This will be our chance to do it right for YOU. A tribute to Steve Swanson, if you will. Last Saturday, my high school music teacher and choir director, Steve Swanson passed away. The funny thing is, I didn’t even know he was ill. What’s worse, given my current day job (I’ll come back to that) I had contemplated reaching out to him.
Steve and I weren’t incredibly close at first. He became the choir director at the beginning of my high school years at Panama Central School. He was replacing Stan Curtis, who had decided to teach elementary music instead. There was a contingent within the choir that was none too pleased about the change. We had always envisioned our senior years working with Mr. Curtis, and now THIS?! Who did this guy think he was?! Wasn’t he the band director?! The mature thing to do at this point, would be to take a step back and allow the new choir director to do his thing, while working with him toward a common goal.
We (as a group) were a lot of things, but mature wasn’t one of them.
Mr. Swanson fought an uphill battle, against attitudes, and asinine behavior that certainly, by virtue of that feat alone, earned him a seat in Valhalla. He met similar challenges when he took over for Mr. Curtis in directing the school musical.
Through it all he persevered, and I came to know him as an excellent teacher, and later as a friend. He was always willing to support any student who wanted to go further with music and the arts. I threw him several curve balls throughout the years, with various solos, NYSSMA adjudications, performance pieces and the like. He was always willing to help, even when the outcome was probably destined to be less than stellar.
That was the greatest lesson he taught me. The act of creation is key. Success is great, but not always guaranteed. As long as you’re creating something, THAT is the important part.
Our last collaboration was a solo I had put together for graduation. It featured three songs from Into The Woods, which I had performed at Jamestown Community College that year in lieu of taking part in the musical at Panama. Steve was excited to help me even though the score I had given him was LITERALLY a “cut and paste (well, taped but…)” job. He hadn’t had too much experience with Stephen Sondheim and really liked the challenge.
That year, the upper administration in our district was embroiled in scandal. As such, Principal Elkin requested I remove one of the songs, “Children Will Listen” from the medley. He feared the lyrics hit a bit too close to home.
He was right. That’s why I chose them.
I took the news to Mr. Swanson. He was disappointed, as he had grown to really like the piece, and knew that “Children…” was the main message of the show itself, let alone what we were building. He looked at me and said, “You know…we could just do it anyway.” Then he sat down on the piano bench and I saw his face change, and his shoulders fall a bit. I knew he had changed his mind. He looked at me plaintively and said, “It’s just, well, you’re leaving…” then added with a wry smile, “I still have to work here!” We laughed at that together for a bit. It was one of those rare moments where a teacher and student see each other as peers for the first time. We mad the cuts, and it still worked.
I saw Steve a handful of times after high school, and he was always full of questions as to what I was doing. We never got to collaborate on anything again, and that’s unfortunate, because that day job I mentioned? I am currently the long term substitute music/band/orchestra teacher for a 3-6 grade Intermediate School in a suburb southwest of Cleveland. As challenging as that would be in and of itself, I am picking up the pieces from another long term sub who “washed out.” Sure enough, I am facing a WHOLE LOT of attitudes and asinine behavior. I could use some advice from Steve right about now. As it is, I will push forward, and keep making/changing lesson plans, to try and break through to kids who are mentally already on summer break.
Who knows? Maybe I’ll succeed. I know I’m creating something. That is what’s important.
Thanks Steve.
“The leader of the band is tired,
And his eyes are growing old,
But his blood runs through my instrument,
And his song is in my soul,
My life has been a poor attempt,
To imitate the man,
I am the living legacy,
To the leader of the band.”

THE MASTER'S BOUQUET
The Master walked in His garden
Plucking flowers along the way;
He plucked one of my loved ones,
To add to his bouquet.
My heart at first was broken,
At the loss of one so dear;
But the tears I shed just washed my eyes,
So I saw His way more clear.
My Lord has a need for just this one,
For the pattern He has in mind;
But it's hard for the rest of us to see
Why we must be left behind.
Perhaps we are not ready to go just yet
We may need to ripen more
To reach the full blown fragrance
My Lord is waiting for.
To each, give forth a fragrance
To each we chance to meet
We should each be trying day by day
To make our fragrance sweet.
So I'm going to try my very best
To be loving and kind each day,
So at last I'll be counted worthy
To be part of my Master's Bouquet.

I want to express my sympathy to all of your family and friends. You definitely made your mark on music, and on many lives. You will be missed by many. I'm pretty sure there is one heck of a jam session going on in heaven right now. I will always remember you as the music teacher with the awesome hair.

Steve is a great loss because he was a great gift. god speed brother.
i will remember steve with a smile on my face and a song in my hart.
when i die give what's left of me away
to the children and the old men that wait to die.
and if you need to cry
cry for your brother walking the street beside you
and when you need me, put your arms around anyone
and give them what you need to give me.
i want to give you something
something better then words or sounds
look for me in the people iv'e known or loved
and if you can not give me away
at least let me live in your eye's and not your mind.
you can love me best by letting hands touch hands,
and by letting go of children that need to be free
love does't die, people do.
so, when all that is left of me is love
give me away.

I am deeply sorry for this loss for our community. My condolences to Steve's brothers and their families, Stephan and Sarita, Sandy & Rosita.... Although Steve is no longer here in the flesh, he will live on in all who knew him. His impact on all who knew him is everlasting. His amazing gift of music and performance is second to none in our area. I knew Steve through many years of choir at Kidder. A true free-spirit, he now has his wings to fly..... I will miss him. Until we meet again.....

Prayers to the entire Swanson family. Your loved one was truly an amazing man.
I can't Imagine PCS without Mr. Steve Swanson. My heart breaks knowing that not every child will get the joy of you being there to teach them the love of music and to be their biggest supporter in their musical journeys. But I am thankful to have had you as my chorus teacher when you 1st came to PCS!!! Our community is at a loss for sure but our children will continue to honor you and make you proud by making a JOYFUL noise... As the kids say we love you SWANDOG!!!! Make a joyful noise in Heaven

Steve touched so many lives! His music along with his caring for his students - he will be greatly missed. Steve & I went to school together, not only JHS but shared rides together to SUNY at Fredonia. His smile was contagious and all of his students loved him! His faith sustained him during his illness. God bless you and all of your family during this difficult time. Steve's light & music will shine on!!

Please accept my prayers/condolences.Known Steve since JHS,played in jazz band together. His ability to improvise then @ 17 was incredible.Never can learn that, a God given talent deep in his soul.Ran into him alot, he always had time to stop and talk.Last time I saw him, spoke about our matching grandfathers ruby rings and his had split in half.Steve was unique, he was the whole package. the looks, the talent and esp. the humility.

I didn't know Steve well, but I do know that he really got into ALL of his students. My neighbor is in Kindergarten and she loved it last year when he worked with the Pre-K students on their songs. I also know that he invested in the students making music a fun thing for them. They respected him. I think because he truly loved what he was doing made it easier for the students to enjoy music as well. PCS is going to have big shoes to fill replacing him as a teacher. I pray that his family and friends will feel God's comfort and peace knowing that Steve is with his Savior. May you rest in peace and rejoice with the angels.

I sometimes wonder why, it seems, the most kind and beautiful amongst us must leave us behind so soon. The older I get it is difficult to reconcile the loss of some, so deserving the gift of longevity. Steve Swanson seemed so incredibly aware of everything going on around him. He didn't just get to know each of his students, but took the time to really know their parents. I remember my mother, knowing she didn't have much time left, wanted to be sure she saw Morgan in her 1st musical, Oklahoma. Amidst all that crowd of people, Steve took time to insure we had a good seat. Mo was a background character that year, but he let my mother know how much he enjoyed working with her granddaughter. She just beamed at that news. I suppose one could spend time being angry at God or the universe, whatever one's preference... and then I realized that I am truly greatful that my children were so incredibly blessed to have had such a devoted music teacher and friend <3
