To one who was only happy if people around him were happy. To one who thought of everyone before he thought of himself. To one who fought for our country, for people he didn’t know, even though it could mean him getting hurt. To one who was the happiest person in the world as long as he was with his family members and they were happy as well. To one who knew exactly what he wanted in life, which was for everyone to be living in a happy place. I’ve never seen more tears in my life until the day he was gone. He meant the world to everyone. If it wasn’t for people like him, the world wouldn’t be an okay place. People like him are who make other happy around him. People like Joshua D. Thomas.

To the family of SSG Thomas:
Thomas and I were stationed together at Ft Bragg, NC. He was an E-4 when I arrived as a PV1. To all the new privates, the E4 mafia was very intimidating. Fortunately, Thomas was always willing to show us what to do when we were lost and always willing to help us out. In the barracks, he always had a smile on his face and never excluded anyone. Everyone grew to be a friend of Thomas. Of all the memories I have with him, there isn't one that I'm not fond of. I remember his going away dinner that we took him out for before he left Ft Bragg. He was surprised, grateful, and truly seemed surprised by the people who felt such a strong bond with him. His reaction is very insightful to his personality. It showed me that Thomas wasn't trying to win friends or gain popularity with anyone. He was just doing what was right and what came naturally to him. My only regret is not keeping in contact with him after he left Ft Bragg. The loss of SSG Thomas is a loss to everyone who was stationed with him, to everyone who was under his leadership, to all of the future soldiers who will miss out on his mentorship and example, to the Engineer Corp, and to the United States Army.
To Thomas, rest in peace Sapper.

Ssg Thomas was an amazing man, leader, and mentor. I had the privilidge of serving as one of his soldiers while assigned to 370th Sapper company in Bamberg Germany. I will never forget the life lessons and hard training he taught me as a private. My deepest condolences go out to the family of Joshua Thomas. Until we meet again brother!

May the Valkyries welcome you and lead you through Odin's great battlefield. May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we might hear it rise from the depths of Valhalla and know that you've taken your rightful place at the table of kings. For a great man has fallen: A warrior. A chieftain. A father. A friend.
until we meet again brother

SSG Thomas' has received his final orders. A Soldier, father, son, brother, and so much more has assumed the roll of Sentry for all who remain in the fight that we call life. He served honourably as a warrior, a defender of freedom. I can only hope to honor his life with continued service, and to continue to protect what he loves until called to his side. Stand guard friend, brother; I'll gladly relieve you when I've earn the honor to be called forward. Sappers in the Breach!

SSG Thomas was a great leader loved by all, made you laught when you were down. I was proud to have know him I was his squad leader during the 4 month deployment we did with 630th and he was just a type of person that would put thing into perspective and it would make sense and if it didn't he'd say this is Ludacris and just go with it. I'm going to miss him. Before I left drum we hung out and we promised we would keep In touch and see each other again I will keep that promise. To SSG Thomas family, he spoke so much about you all and how happy he was he loved you all especially his son, he would talk about him all the time. I'm so sorry for your lost word can't describe what you all are feeling right now may God bless you all and keep you safe and remember he be watching us all from above. To Thomas please check our 6 and we will see each other again my friend. Rest easy Sapper see you Sunday.

Although I personally did not know Joshua my son Joe and his battle buddies did. I heard many stories a few about their deployment together but mostly about the support and encouragement Joshua gave after their return to Fort Drum. My son moved on to another duty station but continued to be not only mentored by Joshua but friends with the brotherhood bond you always hear about. Joe accredits his success to that bond and support. To his mother thank you for raising such a fine young man with honor and dignity to his family take pride in all he gave and in knowing his legacy lives on in these men he touched. R.I.P SSG Thomas you are an American Hero and mine.
