Obituary of George E. Howell
George E. Howell, 81, of Winch Rd., Lakewood, NY, passed away at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 15, 2016, in his home.
A lifelong area resident, he was born December 13, 1934 in the Town of Busti, the son of the late Frank and Gretchen Tracey Howell.
George was a 1952 graduate of the former Lakewood High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from November 6, 1957 to September 16, 1959.
Before his retirement he was employed as a polisher for the former Chautauqua Hardware Corporation for over 40 years. He had also worked for the Ticknor Garage in Busti and the Art Metal Company.
He was a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and the Viking Lodge.
He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved to spend time with his family, especially going to his granddaughters different sporting events most notably their BMX racing meets. He also loved hunting, fishing, roller skating and going out to eat with his family and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors and had owned and operated a small family farm for several years.
George also coached women's softball teams in Chautauqua County for many years. He coached the Front Porch Team, the Surf Club Team and the House That Jack Built Team which won the national championship in 1991.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Betty Barton Howell whom he married November 9, 1963, a son, John Howell of Jamestown, three granddaughters, Amanda Howell (John) Quattrone of Jamestown, Megan (Hunter) Stumpner of Clarion, PA, Heather Reiman of Silver Creek, NY, three great grandsons, Jayden McCarthy, Wyatt Stumpner, Elliott Reiman and two sisters, Marilyn Liner of Adelphi, MD, Susan (William) Shea of Sliver Springs, MD.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Marie Howell who died February 15, 2010, a sister and brother in law, June and Milton Freeburg, a brother and sister in law, Robert and Sarah Howell, and his mother and father in law, Cleland and Ruth Barton.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. Deacon Cathy Smith, chaplain of Chautauqua County Hospice and Palliative Care will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
