Obituary of Frederick J. Callender
Frederick J. Callender, 73, passed away on Thursday, October 20th, 2016, in Westfield Memorial Hospital.
Fred was born in Berwick, Pennsylvania on May 19, 1943 to Paris and Lilian Callender. He earned his Bachelor's degree in secondary education from Bloomsburg University. After college, he moved to Jamestown, NY where he taught Social Studies. In addition to teaching, Fred served as a department chair leader, mentored young teachers, was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, and later became very instrumental with implementing technology into education. After earning a postmasters certificate of advanced study in Educational Administration and Supervision he became the Technology Coordinator for the district.
Fred also enjoyed giving back to his community. He was a lifetime member of the Busti Fire Department where he served as a volunteer firefighter for over twenty years. He was on the Busti Hazeltine Library board. Being an active member of the Vikings, by serving on the Temple Corp, volunteering at fund raisers for the club, and helping with many projects was important to him as this was where he and his wife Kay spent their summers camping. He was also a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, the War Vets, and the Busti Men's Club.
After Fred and Kay retired, they spent ten years wintering in Port Aransas, Texas. They attended the First Baptist Church of Port Aransas and were blessed to participate in the children's food ministry.
Fred had many hobbies some of which included playing basketball with friends, racing sports cars, deep sea fishing with his sons, and last but not least creating stained glass and art with his daughter.
He is survived by his wife Kay, and three children, Michael (Kerin), Jason (Cynthia), and Katie (Randy), as well as six grandchildren; Brandon, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Griffin, Greyson, and Matthew, his brother Adrian (Ann), and many extended family members.
Fred always said his greatest accomplishments in life were his marriage to Kay and his children, Michael, Jason, and Katie and his greatest joys were his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Lind Funeral Home on Sunday, October 23rd at 3:00 PM. Friends and family will be received for one hour prior to the service, starting at 2:00 P.M. Pastor Dan Prewitt of the Mayville First Baptist Church, where Fred and Kay have found their new Church home will be officiating.
Memorials can be made in Fred's honor to the Viking's Playground Association at 214 North Main Street, Jamestown, NY 14701, or The Busti Fire Department at Mill Road, Jamestown, NY 14701.
