Obituary of Douglas A. Geiger
Douglas A. Geiger, Sr., 92, of Jamestown, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, in the Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
He was born September 26, 1924 in Lakewood, Ohio, a son of the late William Charles and Ottillia S. Gaede Geiger.
Doug was a 1943 graduate of Lakewood High School, Lakewood, Ohio, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in fine arts and economics from Denison University, Granville, Ohio in 1950. While at Denison University he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Music Honorary and Blue Key Honorary.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He served as a drum major for the marching bands of Lakewood High School, the U.S. Navy Band and Denison University Band.
Before his retirement, he was associated with his wife in the ownership and operation of Nord's Inc., a women's specialty shop in Jamestown, NY. During his business career he was a member of several service clubs including the Kiwanis Club and the Rotary International.
Doug was a member of the Zion Covenant Church. Throughout his youth and adult life, Mr. Geiger was involved in the YMCA, the ministries of the churches to which he belonged, serving as a youth fellowship counselor, Sunday school teacher, a member of the governing boards. He also sang in the choir.
He was a member of the renowned Orpheus Male Chorus of Cleveland. He was an avid equestrian having owned a 5-gaited saddle bred horse and a Tennessee walking horse. Doug was also very proficient in needlepoint, rug hooking, and oil painting. He also restored and decorated antique cast aluminum playground animals.
He and his family were long time summer residents of Linwood Park in Vermilion, Ohio and served many years on the Linwood Council of Christian Life Board, sponsored by the cottage owners association.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Crossland Geiger whom he married May 3, 1951, a daughter, Elizabeth Ann (William) Harris of Lakewood, NY, three sons, Douglas A. Geiger, Jr. of Winston Salem, NC, Jefferson W. "Jeff" (Janet) Geiger of Aurora, IL, Timothy A. (Lelia) Geiger of Burlington, NC, nine grandchildren, W. Todd Harris of Dewittville, NY , Timothy D. Harris of Lakewood, NY, Daniel Geiger of Rolla, MO, Caitlin J. Geiger ,Rebecca Geiger both of Aurora, IL, Samuel M. Geiger ,Nathaniel D. Geiger, William G. Geiger, Wesley H. "Hank" Geiger all of Burlington, NC.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers and their spouses, his identical twin, Donald E. (Rachel) Geiger and William Charles (Virginia) Geiger, Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 7, 2016, in the Zion Covenant Church. The Rev. Rick Miller, pastor will officiate. A private committal service will be held in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2016, in the Lind Funeral Home.
