Obituary of Martha E. Lindner

Martha E. Lindner, 80, of Jamestown, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, November 10, 2016, in the Lutheran Home and Rehabilitation Center. She had formerly resided on Clyde Avenue in Jamestown and most recently at Hultquist Place. She was born July 22, 1936 in Trenton, NJ, a daughter of the late Lennart and Mary Slocum Lindner. Following her graduation from high school, Martha earned her Bachelor's degree from Columbia University, and a Masters degree in French from Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT, as well as a Master's degree in Linguistics from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. As a Fulbright Scholar she also studied at The Sorbonne in Paris, France. Martha began her teaching career at SS. Peter and Paul School in Jamestown. In 1971, she started as a French Instructor at Jamestown Community College. She retired in 1997 as a full Professor. She was a member of the PEO and the Fortnightly and was active in the Shakespeare Reading Club. She also actively pursued horseback riding, conversational Spanish and had the leading female role in Jamestown Little Theater's 1972 production of The Music Man. Surviving are several nieces and nephews including, Andrew (Cynthia) Alpaugh, Mark (Maryann) Alpaugh both of Jamestown, Clifford (Kim) Alpaugh and John Alpaugh both of Columbia, SC., great nieces and great nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by five brothers, Peter, Paul, David, Philip and Lennart Lindner, two sisters, Isabelle Lindner and Lucy Alpaugh, a niece, Mary Elizabeth Delong, as well as her partner, James E. "Jim" Miller. A celebration of Martha's life will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will not be observed. Inurnment will be in the Lake View Cemetery.
