Obituary of Madelyn K. Wellington

Madelyn Keener Wellington, 92, of 437 Busti-Sugar Grove Road, died Saturday December 31, 2016, in UPMC Chautauqua WCA. A native of Slatington, PA, she was born March 19, 1924, a daughter of the late Russell and Miriam (Musselman) Keener. She was 1942 graduate of Slatington High School where she was an accomplished athlete. In 1945 she graduated from Allentown Hospital School of Nursing, Allentown, PA and was appointed life secretary of the class. She was also a member of the US Cadet Nurse Corp as a student. After graduation, she worked as a registered nurse in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Connecticut and retired from Jamestown General Hospital in 1986. While working in Flint, MI, she assisted in setting up the first post-war recovery room at Hurley Hospital. In Muskegon, MI she was an RN Red Cross volunteer for the National Defense Home Nursing Program. She joined the Girl Scouts in 1935 as a Tenderfoot and was very active in many capacities until the move to Busti. Her other memberships include Busti Willing Workers, serving as president the year the organization celebrated its 75th anniversary, Eastern Star in Muskegon, MI where she served as Worthy Matron in 1975 and later joined the Mecca Chapter in Jamestown, Lucille Ball Little Theater, Jamestown Audubon Society, Lakewood Antique Club, St. Luke's Episcopal Church and RSVP where she was the recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in 2011. She was an instructor/coordinator of the AARP Driver Safety Program for 20 years, life member of Allentown Hospital Alumni Association and Lakewood Rod and Gun Auxiliary and former active member and president of the Jamestown Chapter of AARP. Her interests include reading, knitting, cross stitch, word games and volunteering. Surviving is a son Gregory Wellington of Cotopaxi, CO; four grandchildren Tana Morgan of Ponca City, OK, Mari (Harsha) Desilva of Tulsa, OK, Mark (Marilyn) Wellington serving with the Coast Guard in Port Arthur, Texas and Holly Wellington of Miami Springs, FL and great grandchildren Riley and Madison Morgan, Cameron, Meghan and Coraline Wellington and Amaya and Jake Desilva. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Roy Wellington, whom she married in St Johns Evangelical Reformed Church, Slatington, PA, December 15, 1946 and who died June 15, 2005 and a grandson Stanton Wellington July 18, 2015. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will not be observed. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
