I am sorry for your loss.
Living in the Pittsburgh PA area, I was not aware that Allen had passed until seeing the posting today.
Allen was a wonderful person and of course, a very close family friend. I know he will be greatly missed by all.

I was so sad when I read about Allen. During the 30s and early 40s, our families spent many summers at Chedwel on Chautauqua Lake -- where the only kids my age were 3 boys, Ross Welch, Chuckie Carlson, and Allen. I was the only girl. I had lots of teasing as my last name was Large. Allen had a little sister Susie, cute as a button, and when my first child was born, a girl, we named her Susie! My nephew, Cam Metz, has retired to Bemus Point, and every now and then he would let me know he ran into Allen. I send my deepest sympathy to his family.

To Allen's family:
I had the pleasure of meeting Allen three years ago in Jamestown. I drove down from Buffalo with Allen's old friend, Ed Walsh and Ed's nephew Blake Walsh who directs alumni relations at Nichols. I am Head of School at Nichols, and, like Blake and Ed I am know, I am sorry to hear of Allen's passing. Allen was generous enough to write me and wish me luck when I first arrived at Nichols in the fall of 2013, so I had a lot of fun visiting him in Jamestown that spring and hearing Allen and Ed share stories about their time at Nichols together. Apparently, they were quite the athletes!
I am proud to work at a school that can grow a person like Allen. He told me about his struggles with Parkinson's, but the man I encountered in Jamestown was nothing but proud, generous, and full of life.
Please know that Allen is in my thoughts, and you all are as well. I wish you all strength as you mourn and celebrate his life.
With gratitude and respect,
Bill Clough

As a young man in Jamestown I knew Al. I serviced, washed and took care of his car in the late 60's and early 70's. Al was the nicest man with the great smile. God Bless and rest in peace.

What a wonderful man. Every time I was with Al, I left with a good feeling...He is so special and had such a zest for life. I believe and hope that all that were close
to him felt as good as I did (always was an emotional uplift) to spend time with him. Godspeed Mr. Short. A much better community because of you. Ron

My sincere condolences to Allen's family. He was a good friend for many years both with my husband, Julian, and myself. Always cheerful and helpful. I would always try to see him when I visited my hometown tho these last few years I hadn't seen him. With love and hugs.

Dear Short Family -
Our deepest sympathies go out to all of you with the loss of Al. Al was a very good friend and was so supportive of my development with golf. He always took great interest when I visited Moon Brook as well as a few times when he came to Pittsburgh to play at Fox Chapel and attend the US Open in 1994 at nearby Oakmont. He was a very giving person and for that Jamestown, Chautauqua Institution and WCA Hospital can be very thankful for his time and energy. He was a friend to so many people and we will miss him.
Thank You Al!

Dear Short Family,
I want to express my personal, and the college's collective, condolences for Allen's passing. Though I have been here just a short time (3.5 years), I had the opportunity to get acquainted with Allen through a lunch engagement several years ago. I found him to be a delightful man who was clearly a strong supporter of JCC. It was also apparent to me that he had a great love for the Jamestown community. At JCC, we are very grateful for all of Allen's significant contributions to our cause!
Please know that our kindest thoughts are with you at this difficult time!
Very truly yours,
Cory L. Duckworth, President
Jamestown Community College

Dear Elaine and family,
So sorry to learn of Allen's passing...we were in Canada for a family wedding and didn't realize until the notice from Chautauqua. Allen was a prince of a man, and he enriched our greater community and the people in it by his many good deeds and by his mere presence. We have lost a good, honorable and terrific person.
Love, Lil
