Obituary of C. Gordon Bloomberg

Rev. C. Gordon Bloomberg, 92, of Heritage Village in Gerry, NY passed away on Saturday January 21, 2017. He was born March 9, 1924 in Jamestown, NY, the son of the late Carl V. and Ruby O. Liedblad Bloomberg. Gordon was married for 55 years to the former Carolyn J. Nyholm who passed away November 21, 2001. A Jamestown resident most of his life, Gordon graduated from Jamestown High School in 1942. He attended the University of Cincinnati prior to volunteering for the Army Air Corps in January 1943. He was discharged in 1945 as a bombardier/navigator on the A26 attack bomber. Following his discharge, Gordon joined his father in a trucking business, Bloomberg Express, hauling furniture from factories in Jamestown to stores in Chicago and New England. After fire destroyed the business, he was employed at Jamestown Mutual Insurance Company as a statistician for 23 years. He also worked part-time for Jamestown Electro Plating Co. He grew up attending and continued to be an active member of the former Epworth-Christ United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served as president of United Methodist Men and as a lay member to the church's annual conference. He felt the call to ministry and became a licensed Lay Pastor. Gordon then served United Methodist churches in Centralia, Charlotte Center, and the Christ UM Church, which was the former Italian Methodist Church in Jamestown. Rev. Bloomberg graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington in 1976 and was ordained as a pastor. He then served the Sardinia UM Church, Sardinia, NY, Edwards Chapel UM Church, Clymer, NY and Busti Federated Church, Busti, NY. Following his retirement in 1989, he served as a chaplain at the Chautauqua County Jail in Mayville for 6 years and also as a night chaplain at WCA Hospital. During this time, Rev. Bloomberg also served the Magnolia UM church and served as interim pastor at Epworth-Christ UM Church. He last served as visitation pastor at Christ First UM Church. He was also a volunteer at the WCA Cancer Treatment Center. Gordon was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He wanted nothing more than to spend time with his family. He enjoyed woodworking and made wooden projects for all the family at Christmas. He is survived by seven children: Donna (John) Ireland of Jamestown; David (Charlene) Bloomberg of Thompson Station, TN; Dale (Patricia) Bloomberg of Depew, NY; Dianne (Ronald) Brent of Angola, NY; Denise (Daniel) Koser of Canton, NY; Dorene (the late Gordon) Hess of Jamestown; and Darlene (Jeffrey) Heacox of Sherwood, AR. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren: Michael (Jessica) Ireland, Los Angeles, CA; Alicia (Nicholas) Smith, Sumter, SC; Charles Bloomberg, Lori Zamora, and Hope Bloomberg, all of Thompson Station, TN; Andrew (Emily) Bloomberg, Miami Beach, FL; Brittanie (Steven) Indelacio, Eden, NY; Nicholas (Lindsey) Lobur, Orchard Park, NY; Samantha (Ethiel) Garcia, Weston, FL; Timothy (Emilie) Riddle, Winooski, VT; Nathan (Sang Young) Koser, Piscatawny, NJ; Benjamin Koser, Charleston, SC; Sarah (Edwin) Ramirez, Gerry, NY; Shawna (Andrew) Kibler, Augusta, ME; and Samuel Hess of Jamestown. Twelve great-grandchildren also survive: Liam, David, Cristian, Jaycee, Andee, Skyler, Arturo, Gryphon, Charley, Payton, Ruth, Moses; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife and parents, Rev. Bloomberg was preceded in death by two sisters, Rhoda R. Sundquist and Shirleigh O. Nyholm; sons-in-law Gordon Hess and Jeffrey Riddle; and a granddaughter, Bethany Ireland. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ First United Methodist Church. The Rev.
