Obituary of Janet G. Kates
Janet G. Kates, 86, of 367 Howard Ave., Ellicott Oak Apartments, Jamestown, N.Y., died Friday, March 17, 2017, at her home.
Janet was a native of Jamestown, born Aug. 18, 1930, a daughter of Ivar and Lillian Lundmark Gustafson.
She was a 1948 graduate of Jamestown High School and a 1951 graduate of Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio. Janet was previously a registered nurse at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., the former Jamestown General Hospital and retired in 1994 from WCA Hospital in Jamestown.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jay F. Kates, who died January 17, 2000, in Jamestown. Janet and Jay were married on Nov. 13, 1953, at the First Presbyterian Church in Daytona Beach.
Janet was confirmed at Zion Covenant Church in Jamestown in 1944 and was a life-long member. She served on the visitation committee.
Janet was an active member of the Norden Women's Club, an associate member of the Women's Club of Lakewood, was a member of the Ingjald Lodge 65 Independent Order of Vikings and was also a member of the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. She served on her high school graduating class committee.
Janet enjoyed walking and gardening, playing tennis and golf, canasta and scrabble, and traveling. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children. She also enjoyed reading and doing puzzles. She loved music and enjoyed attending concerts.
Janet is survived by a daughter, Cynthia K. Cordosi (Michael) of Jamestown; three sons, Robert J. Kates of Maine, Douglas F. Kates of Safety Harbor, Fl., and Daniel S. Kates of Safety Harbor, Fl., and a very special grandpuppy, Montana, of Safety Harbor, Fl.
She is also survived by a brother, Kenneth I. Gustafson (Shirley) of Jamestown, a brother-in-law, Charles Rumpelt of Westbury, Long Island, N.Y., several nieces and nephews in New York and Georgia, and her dear friend of many years, Carol Johnson of Jamestown.
Besides her husband, Janet was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Helen G. Tingwall, who died Nov. 30, 2006, a brother-in-law, Ralph E. Tingwall, who died Oct. 22, 2010, and a niece, Rebecca J. Tingwall, who died Sept. 5, 2011.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Rev. Rick Miller, pastor of the Zion Covenant Church will officiate.
Burial will be at the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 4-7pm today, in the funeral home.
