Obituary of George W. Hanson
George W. Hanson, 86, of Busti, formerly of Brown Street, Kiantone, died Tuesday June 27, 2017, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
An area resident all of his life, he was born May 15, 1931, in Jamestown, a son of the late Walter Hanson and Ellen Swanson Hanson Gilbert.
A 1950 graduate of Jamestown High School, he was a Korean War veteran of the US Army serving from 1952-54 with the 366th Engineer Aviation Battalion assigned to SCARWAF. He received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze stars and the United Nations Service Medal.
He was a member of Plumbers Local #232 in Jamestown and Local #22 in Buffalo. He was employed by Tordoff Plumbing, Erickson Plumbing and retired from Circle Mechanical in 1993 after 40 years. Earlier in his career he worked for MRC where he met his wife Grace.
He was a member of Chautauqua Lake Region Antique Automobile Club of America, Herman Kent Post #777 American Legion, War Vets Recreation, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and Busti Federated Church. He was a former member of American Legion Fife and Drum Corps, Thule Lodge and Viking Lodge.
He volunteered at St. Susan Center. In 2016 George traveled with other veterans to Washington DC aboard Honor Flight #51 of Rochester.
George loved being outdoors whether it be camping, deer hunting, cutting wood, planting a garden or traveling. He enjoyed working with his hands by restoring cars and tractors, woodworking and building his dream house in the country before he retired. He was a jack of all trades and master of all of them. More than anything he simply wanted to spend time with his family and helping his children and grandchildren. He was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife, the former Grace Arrance, whom he married August 16, 1952; four children Dr. Jeffrey (Sarah) Hanson of Pittsford, NY, Debra (Linda Doverspike) Loomis of Kiantone, Scott (Jere' Dittrich) Hanson of Springfield, MA and Todd (Barbara) Hanson of Busti; grandchildren Eric (Robert Rizzuto) Loomis of Springfield, MA, Nicole (Annie Grosz) Loomis of Rochester, Ellen Hanson of Oakland, CA, Elizabeth (Gage Spahn) Hanson of Rochester, NY, Collin (Marly Kester) Hanson of Fort Benning, GA, Clayton, Colton, Carson and Catelyn Hanson all of Busti; great granddaughter Ren Rizzuto; sister Genevieve Linquist of Ocean Park, ME and a brother Edward (Pat) Hanson of Frewsburg
