Obituary of Salvatore Caruso

Salvatore "Sam" Caruso, 89, of 222 Sampson St. passed away on June 28, 2017 with his family by his side. Sam was born January 3, 1928, the son of the late Vincenzo and Sebastiana Finocchiaro Caruso. In earlier years Sam was raised with his four siblings in New York City and after serving in the U.S. Navy, on the USS Midway, he moved to Jamestown and married Josephine Antonuccio on May 20, 1950 in St. John's Roman Catholic Church. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this past May. Sam was employed for many years as the Plant Superintendent for the former Chautauqua Hardware Corporation, retiring at the age of 62. He will be remembered as one who loved to read, discuss politics, go to the casino, and spend time with his grandson and family. He and his wife in earlier years enjoyed the sport of horse racing and they were also avid New York Yankee fans. Surviving are his wife, Josephine Caruso, a son, Samuel (Carol Storms) Caruso of The Villages, FL, a daughter, MaryAnn (Mark) Alpaugh of Jamestown, a grandson, Mitchell Alpaugh of Ft. Wayne, IN. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews including, Ronald Caruso, Daniel Caruso, RoseAnn Samuelson, Thomas Caruso and Angela Rodriguez, Madeline Demarco, all of Jamestown. His nephews from New York and New Jersey including, Chuck Carlino, Bobby Carlino, Jimmy Caruso, Richard Caruso and Paul Caruso. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Santo Caruso, Joseph Caruso and his sisters, Millie Ronga, Jean Carlino, and nephews Peter Rizzuto and John Ronga. As per Sam's request, there will be no formal service and visitation will not be observed. Sam's family would like to thank all the loving and caring nurses and doctors in the Intensive Care Unit of UPMC Chautauqua WCA for their outstanding care and support. In memory of Sam and in honor of Dr. Robert Huben, memorials may be made to the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240-0631.
