Obituary of Florence E. Congdon
Florence E. Congdon, 94, formerly of 42 Wescott St. Jamestown, passed away 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 7, 2017, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
A lifelong area resident, she was born April 29, 1923 in Jamestown, NY a daughter of the late Frank Johnson and the late Florence Sharp Johnson Price.
She was a graduate of Jamestown High School and following high school had worked at the former National Worsted Mills and during World War II had worked for Bell Aerospace in Buffalo, NY. She later became an Avon Representative which she enjoyed for many years.
She was a former member of the Celoron United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She later was active in the Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church and the Camp St. United Methodist Church.
Her children and grandchildren will remember her as a loving and giving person. She loved to roller skate and roller dance and also loved singing with the "Sweet Adelines" and was an accomplished poet, writing many poems for her family and friends.
She loved her trips to Maderia Beach, FL and Gulfport, Miss. and loved the time she spent at the campsite with family and friends at Blue Water Beach Campground in Westfield. She was a very thoughtful person who loved all kinds of animals and was known for her lovely singing voice.
Surviving are her three daughters; Janet (Tim) Fagerstrom of Ashville, NY, Robin (Fred) Meacham of Celoron, NY, Judy (Dan) Bernhardt of Gulfport, Miss., her four grandchildren; Robert (Kristin) Peterson of Parker, CO, Todd (Nancy) Bernhardt of Farmington, NY, Nicole (Brian) Miller of Gulfport, Miss., Rebecca (Shawn) Rowland of Jamestown and her eleven great grandchildren; Eric, Tyler, Alex and Elizabeth Bernhardt, Jack and Madelyn Peterson, Trent, Shane, Jordan and Jolie Rowland and Kaitlyn Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Robert J. Congdon whom she married November 24, 1946 and who died November 9, 2015 and two brothers; Harold and Glenn Cornell.
The funeral will be held at noon Saturday, September 16, 2017, in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerald Haglund, chaplain of Heritage Park will officiate. Burial will be in the Portland Union Cemetery, Westfield, NY.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service on Saturday in the funeral home.
Florence's family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility for the excellent care they provided to the Congdon family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd. Jamestown, NY 14701 or to a charity of one's choice.
