Obituary of June Carlson Wahlberg
June Carlson Wahlberg, 102, formerly of 251 W. Summit St., Lakewood entered
into eternal life on Saturday, December 9th at the Lutheran Retirement Home.
June was born in Jamestown on February 6, 1915, the daughter of the late Edward and Ebba Carlson of Mayville, New York.
June resided her first 11 years in Mayville, moving to Jamestown in 1926. She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1932. On July 8, 1933 June married A. John Wahlberg and began to raise a family.
June was devoted to her family, her friends and to being a homemaker. Her community interests outside the home included a life membership in the Jamestown Parent Teacher's Association and membership in the WCA Auxiliary for 45 years, serving as president in 1970-71. She served on the committee for the Hospital Association of New York State for 3 years and annually worked the WCA Country Capers. June was a member of the American Cancer Society board for 25 years. She belonged to the Norden Women's Club, the Fenton Historical Society, Thule Lodge, Crèche, Lakewood Women's Club, Ruby Red Hats, the Lakewood Rod and Gun, JHS 100 Member Club, SPCA and was a past member of the Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club. She was an avid skier, snowmobiler, bridge player and golfer. She loved to travel, especially on cruises with her companion of later years, Red Garfield.
June was baptized and confirmed at Zion Covenant Church and joined the Ashville United Methodist Church in 1957. She was a member of the United Methodist Women's Society and gave of her time and talents to countless church activities. Certainly her most cherished activity was the time she spent writing to, calling and visiting friends who were infirmed, alone or just in need of a caring friend.
June is survived by her children, Edward John "Jack" (Barbara), Plymouth, MA, Diane Parrette Wahlberg, Groton, CT., and James Craig (Janet) of Bemus Point. Surviving grandchildren include Kimberly Wahlberg Giovanucci (Christopher), Erik Wahlberg (Jean), Darrin Wahlberg (Fran), Martha Parrette-Pray (Kim), Robert Parrette (Julie), Megan Parrette Baker (Adrian), Edward Justin Wahlberg, and Ashley Wahlberg Reed (Todd). She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.
June was preceded in death by her husband A. John Wahlberg who died on November 12, 1982; her parents; her brothers Robert and Reynold Carlson; a grandson, Christopher Parrette; and her companion in later years, Edward "Red" Garfield.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Lind Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please consider visiting someone who needs a conversation, a friendly smile or some compassionate understanding. A card or flowers would brighten the day for a person who feels lonely or forgotten. Heaven and June will smile.
June requested that memorials be made to Chautauqua County Hospice and Palliative Care, 20 W. Fairmount Ave. Lakewood, NY 14750; or the Ashville United Methodist Church, 2180 N. Maple Ave. Ashville, NY 14710.
A private family funeral service will be held in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Timothy Phelps will officiate.
