Obituary of Olga L. Hokanson
Olga Hokanson, 96, died Tuesday January 9, 2018 at the home of her daughter Lynne, in Columbus, Ohio. Previously, Olga resided in Jamestown, New York.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hokanson; parents, John and Agnes Sjoquist; and siblings, John Sjoquist, Eleanore Welsh, Ruth Lisk and Walter Sjoquist.
Olga and Paul met in her hometown of Boston, MA during WWII where he was stationed as part of the US Army Corps of Engineers operating and maintaining searchlights. She was a secretary at the Corps office where he frequently visited. With both coming from Swedish families, it was a fine match. After marrying, they moved to Paul's hometown of Jamestown, NY where they built a home in Boniwood and raised their family. Together they owned and operated the Hillside Motel on Foote Avenue in Jamestown. Olga was a member of the Stillwater United Methodist Church and held many positions there over the years. After retirement, Olga enjoyed swimming regularly at the JCC pool with a group of friends that continued into their 80's and 90's. They could be found at their special table at Wendy's every Monday for lunch.
Olga is survived by her children: Bruce Hokanson (Dorothy) of Jamestown, and Lynne Hokanson and Christine Hokanson, both of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren: Ashley Noon (Greg) of Jamestown, Brian Hokanson (Missy) of Falconer, Caitlin Stoner (Ken) of Columbus and Rose Hokanson of Columbus; and five great grandchildren: Griffin, Elle, Dillon, Samantha & Monica.
Olga was a great cook and was once featured in the Post Journal with her favorite recipes; she passed her cooking skills on to her daughters and granddaughters. In her youth she was a competitive roller skater and competed in couples dance competition. Olga was a skilled crossword puzzle solver and an avid reader of newspapers, biographies and novels. She was a longtime patron of the local library and it is from her love of reading a great mystery that her request for Memorial donations be made to the Myers Memorial Library in her honor at Myers Memorial Library, 6 Falconer St., Frewsburg, NY 14738.
Olga will be buried next to her husband Paul, at the Kiantone Cemetery. No funeral service or visitation will be observed. The family will celebrate her life privately at a future date.
Olga set an example of how to care for your family by being caregiver to both her husband and mother in the final years of their lives, which she then received in return while in the loving care of her children. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
