Obituary of Janice D. Nagle
Janice Diane (Bulow) Nagle
1928 -2018
Janice Diane (Bulow) Nagle, 89, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at UPMC Chautauqua WCA.
A lifelong resident of Jamestown, N.Y., she was born June 26, 1928. Janice was the daughter of Bennie and Ann (Carlson) Bulow and granddaughter of Malcolm and Matilda Carlson and Gustaf and Ida Bulow. She had lived as a resident of Chautauqua Ave. in Jamestown for over sixty years and enjoyed summers at the family cottage in Bemus Point on Chautauqua Lake.
Janice was, for many years, with her husband Don and her mother and father-in-law Joe and Ethel (Gustafson) Nagle, proprietor of Nagle's Grocery on Newland Ave. She loved visiting with her customer-neighbors and enjoyed teaching children to count as they learned the value of pennies, nickels and dimes, matching them with penny candy laid out on the counter. Nagle's Grocery was a hub of family and community life, a cherished memory for the rest of her life.
She was a member of the 1946 graduating class of Jamestown High School. Following graduation, she worked as a secretary at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Jamestown and in later years worked for Jamestown General Hospital and The Cake Shop.
Janice enjoyed being a part of a Jamestown baseball family, travelling to games in ballparks throughout the region. In her youth, she was "batboy" for her father Bennie Bulow's Town Hall team. As a teen and young adult, she cheered on Joe Nagle's Steel Partition Bombers with her husband Don, his cousins (Joe and Bob Bender and Steve Dankovich), and many friends as players on the championship team. As team members aged, she became a fan of Jamestown Old-Timers Baseball which Joe Nagle helped organize.
Janice loved her family, always caring for elderly members and following the lives of its younger members. She was supportive of all school and extra-curricular activities involving her sons. As their families grew, she ensured her home and cottage were always ready for family visits and vacations with a constant supply of food always ready to go. Her kitchen, dining room, and living room were places where you would always find a gathering of family (Nagle, Carlson, Bender, Gustafson, Lewis, Jones, and Johnson).
Janice celebrated her Swedish heritage and ensured that the holiday table was filled with the recipes of Sweden handed down from her mother and grandmothers. She loved Chautauqua County, Chautauqua Lake, Jamestown, and the "South Side". Any drive with her through the neighborhoods of the city would include a running commentary on those who had lived in the houses and a narrative of how individuals and families were related to each other through the generations. She loved people and their life stories.
She was baptized, confirmed and married at First Lutheran Church and remained a member of the congregation her entire life.
She is survived by her sons and their families: Pastor Daniel (Donna) Nagle of Jamestown, NY; Thomas Nagle of Latrobe, PA; Gerald (Denise) Nagle of Orchard Park, NY; her granddaughters and their families: Lindsay (Alex) Mericli of Houston, TX; Ingrid (Richard) Kraft of Kirtland, OH; Meredith (Steve) Toth of Kirtland, OH; Isabella and Lily Nagle of Orchard Park, NY; her great-grandchildren: Gwyneth and Lukas Kraft, Malcolm and Conrad Mericli, and Rowen and Linnea Toth.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband Don A. Nagle, her parents Bennie and Ann (Carlson) Bulow, and her in-laws Joe and Ethel (Gustafson) Nagle.
Friends will be received Friday, February 2, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lind's Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Lind's Funeral Home with burial at Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, NY. Pastor Dan Nagle of First Lutheran Church and Pastor Dan Rumfelt of "Lutheran" will officiate at the funeral. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow at First Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, 120 Chandler St., Jamestown, NY 14701.
