Obituary of Carol J. Funcell

Carol J. Funcell, 74, formerly of Jamestown and Charleston, SC, died Friday April 27, 2018, in Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing. She was born January 5, 1944, in Jamestown, a daughter of the late John and Alice Matthews Allen, Sr. She was a 1962 graduate of Jamestown High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Empire State College with a minor in African American Studies. While living in Charleston, SC from 1998-2009, she was employed by University Medical Associates as a laboratory technician up until the time that she suffered from a massive stroke in 2000. During her many years in Jamestown she worked in the medical laboratories of Jamestown General Hospital, Clark Labs and Trinity BioTech. She was a member of Jamestown Unitarian Universalist Church. She enjoyed painting, reading, puzzles, cheering for the New York Yankees and being outdoors whether at the beach or camping. Everyone knew Carol for her signature greeting of "Yoo Hoo" and she was a proud participant of Woodstock. Surviving are two daughters Celeste (Ken) Purdie of Simpsonville, SC and Chanda Funcell Brown of Charleston; three grandchildren Jordan Embley-Bethell of Charleston, Alese Brown of Laurel, MD and Devyn Brown of Charleston; siblings John (Amy) Allen and Terri (David) Parker of Santa Rosa, NM; her second husband Steve Funcell of Randolph and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death her first husband Paul Bethell; a son Parrish Allen, sister Georgia Hawkins and beloved nephew Timothy Biggs.
