Howard & Royce,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear father and grandfather. Maplehurst will never be the same again without seeing him riding on his golf cart with his beloved Divot. He would always come out to meet Jake and me and have some joke or story to tell. Thank you Wally for all of the play at your course. You will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace dear friend

Howard, Randy and Sherri,
I was deeply saddened when I heard of the home-going of your dad and my friend Wally. I am so sorry that I am not able to attend the funeral or the visitation because I am out of town for business meetings. Please know that I am there with you in my thoughts and in my prayers.
There were many men who had a powerful impact on my life. Few, however, had a greater influence on me than Wally did. Growing up at Maplehurst was a wonderful thing! I gained lifelong friends there. I learned much about how to live right and how to work hard. I also learned how to treat people, respect them and have a good time while doing it. Wally had a great deal to do with all of that. He was always quick with a smile and when we were kids, he also knew how to get our attention when we messed up. As you know, for a number of years, I had the great privilege to work for him, primarily as his caddy, and I did so countless times. I carried his bag at the course and also at a number of tournaments around Western New York and Pennsylvania. It was great! I spent so much time with him then. I heard his stories, saw him interact with the members and often prominent guests. All the while, he shared with me things, not just on how to hit a golf ball, but the little things that would help mold my life. I will always be thankful.
Please know that the Bjork's loved your dad, but none more than me. It was a comfort knowing that our nearest neighbor on Big Tree Road was always there and he could be counted on if needed. Even as the years passed, when Wally drove by and one of us was outside, he would always wave and tap his horn to say hi. I will still stop up at the course and try to see one of you, but there will be a void, knowing that Wally Holmes is not there anymore. But know this, Wally had a great impact on me, my brother Dan as well as my mom and dad. He also helped breathe life into all of the Maplehurst "kids" from the 60's. I know you were proud of him.
I will miss him.
Your friend,
Randy Bjork

Sending our sincere condolences to the family of Wally Holmes,
I want to start out by telling our story of how we met Wally.
I am originally from Bemus/Ellery, born and raised, I moved to Minnesota many years ago.
In 2011 we started a tradition of renting a cabin on Chautauqua Lake every summer for 5 years.
We would all drive back for these vacations, my husband, our son, his friend, and myself.
One thing we always did while in town was golf. We tried many courses through the 5 years on our yearly trips. The first year one of the courses we played was Maplehurst, and of course returned to play there every summer.
Our son was approximately 13, his friend 17.
We all looked forward to going to Maplehurst, yes for the great golf, but more importantly being able to see Wally and hear his stories. Wally was also excited to show the boys new magic tricks. These two young men were in awe of Wally, and his life of golf and experiences.
Wally would always have his trusty 4 legged friend right by his side.
We understood the last few years we were there that Wally's health was failing. We all took in his advice, stories and his love of the game of golf.
As we went back home to Minnesota, and throughout that year when we were all together, and talking golf or western New York, it would always come up
"I wonder how Wally is doing".
We are all saddened by Wally's passing. Comfort in knowing Wally will have an everlasting impression on all of us, and especially 2 young men who adored him.
Thank you Wally for being a part of our life's journey.
Greg, Cathy, Andrue and Kyler

Dear Claudine, Howard, Randy, Sherri and the whole Holmes family,
The Jamestown golf community has lost a true golf icon. Wally truly loved kids and he loved kids who played golf even more. He was so instrumental on the development of so many good golfers through the years, and more importantly the development of many fine people through the great game of golf. As I reflect back on my years growing up I was so fortunate to live across the road from Maplehurst where I learned the great game and love the game to this day which Wally is mainly responsible. He would let us kids play just about anytime we wanted. I would also caddy for Wally at a time when he could really play the game (but, if he could only putt!), and shag balls for him when he found time to practice. When I would see him later in life he was sincere in asking how me and my brothers were doing and how my parents were doing. Always, he would ask me how I was playing. Wally truly loved the game of golf and it was shown by how he lived his life, an inspiration to all who knew him. I do not believe it was coincidental that he passed on the first day of the US Open! I wish I could have thanked him personally for everything he has given. Thank you, Wally Holmes!
With deepest sympathies!

My heart is broken to learn of Wally's passing from our current midst. Wally was a great friend of my father, Chuck Davis, and I came to know and love him like family. He just always lit up the room and made me feel at home. He even invited me for a festive family Thanksgiving get together. Wally truly loved people and animals, as evidenced by his adoration of Bogie and Divot. I will miss Wally and extend my thoughts and prayers to his loving family. I like to think that he is convening with my Dad and Mom in heaven, along with Bogie and all of my sweet departed fur babies..... Maybe Wally can even get Dad to golf again....

Claudine, Howard, Randy and Sherri:
So sorry for your great loss……You are in our thoughts and prayers
Wally was a great guy and a very dear friend. He will be sincerely missed by a great number of friends. He was more than generous with his time, his talent, his resources and his love for almost everyone he crossed paths with. I first met Wally about 1960, at Conewango CC, when Jamestown played a high school match against Warren. We always kept in touch even though I moved around the country a bit. Wally was the best man at my wedding. At the beginning of every golf season he would send my boys, who still lived locally, membership cards to Maplehurst. He also put them to work at the club in the summer. Through the years we took many golf trips including spring journeys to North Carolina, winter trips to Florida and Arizona and Monday trips to more nearby clubs usually with Howard and Randy. As time passed and Wally was hampered by the toll of his many hip procedures we would still go, but he would ride around in a cart while the three of us played on. In later years we didn't play much golf but we would, when I was in town, take dates (our Moms) out to dinner. Wally would even accompany me on a few winter business trips including Canada. As time passed we talked a lot, especially on the phone about everything and anything. We talked a lot about faith and about the family who he loved so dearly. He was so special, as everyone who knew him would testify and he will leave a profound mark in the hearts of many.

Claudine, Howard, Randy & Sherri:
Thursday, June 14, 2018 was one of the saddest days of my life, as I learned that my treasured friend's time on Earth had come to an end. He meant more to me than any of you will ever know. When I was young, I looked up to him like a father figure and admired his ability to play golf. As I grew older, I admired how he always welcomed those, from years gone by, who would stop by to see him and visit for a while. He always had a smile on his face, gave me that incredibly strong handshake, and told me how glad he was that I "stopped by". We called each other frequently, even during the Winter months, just to see how each other was doing. He would always ask how my wife, Sue, was doing and tell me to give her his best. We grew even closer as the years went on. He was always the first person that I would go see, when I made my annual trip home each July. And each visit was more special to me than the one the year before. It was always a pleasure to spend time with him. In the end, I was very thankful that we were able to speak twice, in his final days, and express our feelings for each other. I thanked him for his friendship and all that he ever did for me. He was the reason that golf became a big part of my life.
Susan and I send our deepest sympathy and prayers. Stay strong and remember all of the good times. That is what he would want you to do.
All of our love,
Jeff & Susan Hutchinson

Dear family,
Nancy and I send our sympathy on this huge loss. What a loss indeed. He was my oldest friend. Meeting each other when I was 15 years old was nerve wracking. Bob Morris told me that I was going to perform at his friends club. At that age, I was ready but Bob's show went on too long. Still, your father greeted me with that utmost kindness that won't be forgotten. I remembered him wearing a 70's plaid jacket. Time passed. I reunited with your dad around 1990 or so. I told him who I was and my connection to Bob Morris. I had a 1980's look with shoulder height permed hair. He said; ' Bob only spoke of a young kid magician that was really good. He never mentioned you. ' I said, ' sir, that was me and he told me before he died to find you. I am that kid but older now. I can prove it if you like. ' He called Bob's widow and confirmed it. He made me prove it too by inviting me up to the club that I had visited years before. Only this time, I would grace the stage. Right after, he greeted me with that huge smile and thanked me with that ; " great , great job" sentence. The day after, he called my place. From that day until my friends death, he called my place. From that day until my friends death, he had me grace his stage. He asked me to teach him the art of magic. From that day until my friends death, he invited me to all he had. From that day long ago, he sent out Christmas cards, greetings and phone calls to myself and Nancy to show his love. Visiting the club was like entering your favorite theme park. You know; the sounds, lights, look of the place was magicial In and of itself. But the ride did not begin until your Father / grandfather arrived. He WAS the Theme! Even visiting him In the Hospital here In Erie , Pa was no different. Although ill In Health , he said he was fine. Still thanking me and Nancy For the magic and years Of friendship, he alluded to me His future. ... I really cannot go on much more. You all know how he impacted you. When you can literally warm your hands off of somone's personality, you know how special they are!! So glad we talked and said goodbye before he passed. Nancy was so thankful as well. I just lost my oldest friend. But I gained years Of true magic that some only Wish For ...
