Obituary of Helen Swan Gustafson

Helen Swan Gustafson, 101, formerly of 921 Newland Avenue, Jamestown, died Thursday June 21, 2018, in the Bemus Point home of her daughter and son-law. A native of Jamestown, she was born December 19, 1916, the oldest of six children born to Harry and Emma Olson Swan. She was a 1935 graduate of Jamestown High School. Always known as a loyal and hard worker, she was employed for many years by Marvin Community House, carrying heavy trays until the age of 85. She earlier had worked in the offices of Jamestown Mutual Insurance and Burns Case Goods. For over 80 years she was a faithful member of the Salvation Army's Jamestown Temple Corps and served as treasurer of its Ladies Aide Society for over 60 years. She will be remembered for her strong Christian faith, her Swedish dishes and pastries, and being content with little, in order to selflessly accommodate others. Surviving is a daughter Martha Maxwell (Mitchell Ortego) of Bemus Point; granddaughter Megan Ortego of Frisco, TX and sister Florence Carlson of Youngstown, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Harold Gustafson, whom she married July 2, 1937 and who died February 5, 1992; a son Wesley Gustafson; two brothers Duane and Floyd Swan and two sisters Dorothy Noyd and Marian Applequist. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Salvation Army. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service Sunday in the Salvation Army.
