Obituary of Sherwood A. Wright
Sherwood Allan "Woody" Wright, born August 30, 1930 to Allan and Ruth Johnson Wright in Jamestown, went to be with his Lord on August 3, 2018 at WCA.
Sherwood grew up on Stowe Street, filling his early years with scouting, basketball, and baseball, joining the neighborhood in making their own ball field on Clyde Ave, though it was so small they had to bat left handed to keep it within the lot. He later would play on School teams as well as for the Steel Partition Steelers. Graduating from Jamestown High School's class of 1948, he continued on to North Park College in Chicago playing on both the basketball and baseball teams, graduating with the class of 1951. Following that, he was drafted into the Army and spent the next two years stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Upon arriving home, he was smitten by Jamestown native Carilyn Larson, who became his wife in 1959. The couple made their home(s) on the North side of Jamestown, building upon the lots that he and childhood friends used for their baseball fields years previously. Though often moving within the confines of the city, Sherwood and Carilyn never strayed too far from their home of Jamestown, and Zion Covenant Church. As he did not have many hobbies, "Woody" devoted much of his free time to family, friends and his beloved Cleveland Indians. His humor, generosity, kindness, and selflessness were recognized by everyone who met him, more often than not over coffee at one of the local shops around town that he frequented daily over the years. He regretted not making it often enough to Fishers on 3rd Street the few last months.
Always a hard worker, he started working at the extended families' company, Jamestown Steel Partitions, then moving on to work in the commercial department of the Jamestown Telephone Company for 38 years through its various name changes (Mid-Continental and Alltel Phone Company) making many lifelong friends. As he was always one to help others, he helped his father-in-law construct homes in the Jamestown area, and later in life often volunteered at Zion Covenant Church after he had retired.
His dry, deadpan delivery of comebacks and various one-liners added a nice bit of color to a legacy of genuine love and friendship, carried on by his children, Stephen Wright, Thomas (Carol) Wright and Janelle W. (Douglas) Schneider; and his grandchildren, Elijah, Hannah, Lauren and Sean Wright; Brandon, Kevin and Aarushi McElrath; Nieces and nephews Lynn (Craig) Dole, Kim (William) Lasher, Mark (Jeannie) Erickson and Kirk (Lindsey) Erickson and many extended family and dear friends.
Services will be held at Zion Covenant Church, 520 Fairmount Ave. WE, on Tuesday, August 7th, 2018. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:30, followed by a Celebration of (his) Life at 1:30 PM.
Donations in remembrance may be sent to Zion Covenant Church, 520 Fairmount Ave, WE, Jamestown, NY, Camp Mission Meadows, 5201 Rt. 430, Dewittville, NY, or your charity of choice.
