Candy and Shirley,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I just found out. Dick Carlson was a wonderful man. He was very fun loving, intelligent, and talented. I sang in the choir that he directed. He made everything fun! I imagine he is having a good time with my dad up in Heaven...perhaps with Bill Smith and the rest of the Sunday School Pals! I will treasure the times I spent with him. My sister and I spent some time with him when our parents went to Europe. Dick Carlson was our substitute dad. We had a blast. He was quite the jokester. He would say, "What good is it to have girls around if you cannot tease them a bit." He will be missed! You are in our hearts and prayers.

Through the past 57 years Rickard & I had many conversations regarding all phases of business and life in general. Rickard was like Harry Truman. You didn’t have to ask what he meant because it was always clearly stated.
I consider it a privilege to have worked with Richard thru my years with Blackstone. He was a great boss, teacher & friend. We had many memorable experiences through our business travels.
Richard was very dedicated to business, directing the church choir and family. He was very proud of Candy & her achievements, which he often mentioned.
We will dearly miss him & Shirley at the Blackstone retirement party; they just won’t be the same.
Norma & I ofter our deepest sympathy to the family.

I didn’t know Dick Carlson that well, but he was a good friend to both of my parents (Herman & Delores Leonard) due to their common attendance at the Stillwater EUB (later United Methodist) Church. Although I didn’t know him that well, he probably had a bigger impact on my life than any other person. When I was in high school, he invited me to take a tour of the Blackstone manufacturing facility that he worked at for most of his career. He explained the products and processes at Blackstone, and his role as an engineer. Based on that visit, and my respect for Dick, I decided to major in Mechanical Engineering (his field) and even attended the University of Rochester (his alma mater.) When I finished my MS at Caltech, Dick offered me a job, which I (maybe foolishly) turned down. I never told Dick about his influence; I wish I had.
To Shirley and Candi, my most heartfelt condolences. Your husband and father was a truly good man.

I had the pleasure of being in the choir under Dick's direction for many years. I enjoyed the opportunity he provided me to accompany as well as sing in the choir. I also have many fond memories of picnics and boat rides at the lake. He had a positive impact on many at the Stillwater church. I can remember him coming to talk to me when I substituted as organist when I would come home to visit and he would always have encouraging words and compliments for my music choices. My condolences to your family.

Dear Candy, Erica, Jenna and Reid,
We have such fond memories of Uncle Dick that we will keep close to our hearts. Long ago boat rides to Chautauqua, many Thanksgivings, Christmas Eves and New Year's Eves. We are so glad we visited with him in Florida this past spring! He was a great uncle and we will miss him dearly. May God give you His strength as you face the future without your beloved Father and Grandfather. We love you all.
