Obituary of Robert L. Vergith
Robert L. "Bob" Vergith, Sr., 85, of 4103 Lawson Rd., Jamestown, passed away peacefully at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2018, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility, surrounded by his loving family.
An area resident for most of his life, his was born April 19, 1933 in Warren, PA, a son of the late Harold and Eleanor Moore Vergith.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving from December 10, 1951 to December 2, 1954 during the Korean War. During his tour of duty he received the German Occupation Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with a bronze service star and was a purple heart recipient.
Before his retirement he was employed by the former Blackstone Corporation and later Valeo Engine Cooling for many years. He also was a self-employed electrician working as Bob and Son's Electric.
He was a longtime active member of the Busti Federated Church, a life member of the Busti Fire Department for over 50 years where he served several years as a fire police captain and was a past member of the board of directors. He was a member of the Busti Men's Club, the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and the Lakewood Memorial Post 1286, American Legion. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed being outdoors.
Surviving are five children; Susan (David) Klice of Busti, Nancy (David) Burnett of Bear Lake, PA, Robert (Lorraine) Vergith, Jr. of Brewerton, NY, Carl (Kathy) Vergith of Busti, Sandy Hamilton of Jamestown, his son-in-law, Rodney L. Swanson of Ashville, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, a great great grandchild, and his eight siblings; Barbara (Vic) McBride of Celoron, Elnora Shuttleworth of AZ, Shirley Wolfe, Sally Bisbe, Edith Vergith all of PA, Mazie Furlow, Linda Spitale both of Jamestown and Herman Vergith of Las Vegas, NV.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Harriet F. Parker Vergith whom he married July 2, 1955 and who died October 31, 2017, a daughter, Rosemary Swanson who died January 1, 2016, a brother, Harold Vergith and three sisters, Elsie M. Sullivan, Betty Brown and Rosemary Vergith.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Busti Federated Church. The Rev. Lee O'Brien, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the Busti Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Jamestown Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home.
