Obituary of Eleanor W. Mira
Eleanor Mae Withrow Mira, 91, formerly of Howard Ave., West Ellicott in Jamestown and Hultquist Place died Wednesday, October, 10, 2018 at the Lutheran Skilled Nursing Home in Jamestown.
Born May 22, 1927 in Peach Creek, WV, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Oliver Clarence and Mary Elizabeth Withrow. She was the widow of Felix J. Mira whom she married September 18, 1948 and who died March 11, 1997.
Eleanor was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lakewood. She served on several committees in her church and was a past treasurer of the Altar and Rosary Society. She helped coordinate Spaghetti Dinner fundraising events. She also set up and served many funeral receptions and helped organize rummage and bake sales.
On April 26, 2009 Eleanor received the Sacred Heart Servant Award from the Most Reverend Edward Kmiec, Bishop Emeritus of Buffalo during an Investiture Ceremony at St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo, NY. This Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker recognized Eleanor's devotion and unselfish labors on behalf of her parish. Eleanor was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary and a member and past officer of the Marco Polo Club in Jamestown.
Eleanor enjoyed gardening. She was an avid bowler and loved playing cards. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed entertaining in her home and always made the holidays special for everyone. She especially loved cooking and baking for family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband Felix, Eleanor was preceded in death by her nine brothers: Charles, Oliver Clarence Jr., Ernest, James, Carl, Donald, Melvin, Willard and Tyrone; two sisters: Helen and Gladys; and a grandson, Gregory Michael Humm, who died January 22, 2018.
Eleanor is survived by her five children: John David (Sandra) Mira of Windsor, CO, Mary (Fred) Humm of Dewittville, NY, Marla (Randy) Holt of St. Leonard, MD, Thomas (Susan) Mira of State College, PA and Felix (Lori) Mira II of Keller, TX. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Eleanor's family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Hultquist Place, to those who gave special care to her at the Lutheran Retirement Home and to Reverend Daniel Rumfelt, chaplain at Lutheran. We also wish to thank Chautauqua County Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
Eleanor's children will receive family and friends from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday, October 17th in the Lind Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 6:45 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM Thursday, October 18th at St. Mary of Lourdes Church in Bemus Point. The Reverend Todd Remick, Pastor, will be the celebrant. Interment will be in the Mausoleum of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chautauqua Hospice and Palliative Care, 20 W. Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14750; Hultquist Place Assisted Living, 715 Falconer Street, Jamestown, NY 14701; or to a charity of your choice.
