Obituary of Suzanne B. Howig

Suzanne B. "Sue" Betz Jordan Howig, 84, formerly of Royal Ave. Jamestown, NY, passed away at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2018, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility. Coming to Jamestown from Fairport, NY, Sue was born December 29, 1933 in Canandaigua, NY, a daughter of the late Herman E. and Nellie Oestrike Betz. She was a 1951 graduate of Fairport High School and a 1955 graduate of the former Fredonia State Teachers College. Before her retirement in 1989, she was employed by the Jamestown Board of Education for 33 years, as an elementary school teacher, working at several schools, retiring from Bush Elementary School. She was very active in the Jamestown community and was a member of the Marvin Community House, Jamestown Choral Society, served on the board of directors for the Community Music Project, a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the Jamestown Teachers Association, the Political Study Club, the former Jamestown Jaycees and the Jamestown Audubon Society. She also served on the Jamestown Zoning Board of Appeals for 18 years. Sue was also very active in Girl Scouting where she received a 30 years pin for her participation. She established and maintained the wild flower garden at Girl Scout Camp Timbercrest in Randolph, NY for many years. She was a member of the Lucille Ball Little Theater where she was the makeup designer for 15 years and also for the Shoestring Players. She served as a consultant for several are high school musicals and taught theatrical makeup classes for students. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed spending time at her cabin in the woods in Conewango, NY. She loved sitting by the creek, wild flowers and being a part of and touching mother earth. She was an avid reader of historical fiction and novels, wrote poetry and loved to travel to the Adirondack Mountains and her visits to Mt. Irenaeus. As an animal lover she loved her pet collies over the years, Duff, Hector, Codi, Kena and Ringo and was active with the Collie rescue of Western, PA. Surviving are her two nephews, David L. Kugler of Silverdale, WA, Daniel E. Kugler of Silver Springs, MD and her neighbors, Roberta Thompson, June Stoddard and Mary Maxwell. Her family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Memory Garden and Heritage Park for their kind and compassionate care they gave to Sue over the past several years. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn B. Kugler. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2018, in the Lind Funeral Home. Father Louis McCormick, ofm, of Mt. Irenaeus Franciscan Mountain Community, will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
