Obituary of Burtis D. Hallberg
Burtis D. "Burt" Hallberg, 83, formerly of the Town of Ellery, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, December 25, 2018, in the Heritage Park Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.
A lifelong area resident, he was born September 30, 1935 in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Louie G. and Ina C. Peterson Hallberg.
He was a 1954 graduate of the former Bemus Point High School.
Burt was employed as a bus driver for the Bemus Point School District for 10 years from 1957-1967 and worked for the Town of Ellery for 25 years from 1967-1992, working as highway Superintendent for nearly 21of those years from January 1, 1972 until his retirement on September 30, 1992. Following retirement, he then worked for five summers for Corbet Hill Gravel Production in Randolph, NY from 1993-1997. Previously, he and his brother Elmer operated a dairy farm in Ellery Center from 1954-1967, while he drove school bus.
He was a member of the Bemus Point United Methodist Church where he served on several church committees. He also served in the New York State Army National Guard for nine years with Company B in Jamestown, NY. He was also a member of the Chautauqua County Town and Village Highway Superintendent Association serving on many committees, was an officer for six years and served as President for two years from 1988 & 1989, becoming a life member upon his retirement. His other memberships include Ingjald Lodge 65, Independent Order of the Vikings, Thule Lodge 127, VASA Order of America and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. He was a member of the Ellery Center Fire Department where he served as fire commissioner for the Town of Ellery Fire Department for 20 years.
Surviving are his four children, Scott (Shari) Hallberg of Staunton, VA, Jody Beelendorf of Fisherville, VA, John (Peggy) Hallberg of Jamestown, NY, Charles Hallberg of Staunton, VA, nine grandchildren, Katie Hallberg, Danny Hallberg, Ellery Beelendorf, Alex Beelendorf, Caleb Hallberg, Cari Hallberg all of Staunton, VA, Elizabeth Hallberg, Emylia Hallberg, Stephen Hallberg all of Jamestown, NY and two brothers, Elmer L. Hallberg and David C. Hallberg both of Bemus point, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Ruth I. Withington Hallberg whom he married November 11, 1961 and who died January 25, 2018.
The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December29, 2018, in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Michael Childs, pastor of the Lakewood United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Fluvanna Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 5-7 p.m. Friday and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday in the funeral home.
