Obituary of Phyllis J. Harris
Phyllis Jean Harris, 97, of Heritage Green Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility, formerly of Bemus Point and Vero Beach, FL., passed away Sunday December 30, 2018 at UPMC Chautauqua Hospital.
She was born October 7, 1921 in Jamestown the daughter of the late William and Pattie Carpenter Ackroyd.
She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jamestown, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Bishop Overs Guild. She was also a member and past president of the Order of the Daughters of the King of St. Nathanials Church in Florida; member and past president of John W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW Auxiliary; life member and past president of Parent Teacher Association of Celoron and Southwestern High Schools; member of WCA Hospital Auxiliary serving at the Snack Shop and Grey Lady Association; Leader in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts; member and past president of Lakewood-Busti Golden Agers; member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club Auxiliary and member of the Red Hats of Lakewood.
Phyllis was an avid reader, enjoyed cards and opera in Toronto, and summer season at Chautauqua. She traveled extensively in the U.S., Hawaii and Europe with her husband. Most importantly, she loved her family and her life as a full-time homemaker.
Surviving are two sons: Barry (Anne) Harris of Bemus Point, NY; Bruce (Susan) Harris of Ashville, NY; a daughter-in-law Susan Harris of Jamestown, NY; six grandchildren: Stacey (Arthur) Weinstein of Charlotte, NC, Patrick Harris of San Jose, CA, Michael Harris of Campbell, CA, Dawn (Dave) Hammond of Sinclairville, NY, Shawn (Kimberly) Harris of Brewster, MA, Carmen (Rae) Farrugello of Falconer, NY; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews, especially her close niece, Lisa Marra of SC.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Paul W. Harris Sr., whom she married December 23, 1939 and who died December 26, 1995; a son, Paul W. Harris Jr., who died February 26, 2011; and a grandson, Thomas W. Harris who died October 1, 2018.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church at a time and date to be announced. Entombment will be in the columbarium at St. Luke's Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 410 N. Main Street, Jamestown, NY 14701; or to a charity of one's choice.
