DONALD SMITH JR AND YONG-MI SMITH posted a condolence
Thursday, January 31, 2019
Dear Family Members:
Where to begin and our sincere apologies for sending this along such a belated fashion...
I have been a member of the local Elks Lodge in Jamestown since 1981 although living away from Jamestown in Washington, DC or Los Angeles for most of that time period. We now live in LA for about 7 months of the year with the rest of the time spent in Jamestown where I grew up.
My Dad Don Smith Sr was a member of Elks Lodge #263 for 51 years. Bob planned and organized an Honorary Ceremony for that achievement for Dad about 5 or 6 years ago. It seems like yesterday. It was his idea of course. As we visited the lodge when in Jamestown during the Summer and on weekend visits we experienced how well-organized the Lodge was under Bob's tutelage when he served as its Exalter Ruler or ER. I made it known that in my studied opinion Bob was the best ER that I had ever known. Bob brought a new energy and enthusiasm to the Club and to its members. Of course that would not be in question given his eternally youthful spirit.
What did Bob's loss mean and do to us?? Last Summer I suffered a rather extreme GI condition that rather brought me to my knees. Not completely understood is the fact that along with it I lost my ability to shed tears. Similar to that of our beloved past George H. W. Bush 41, I could call myself a crier. I suppose that I found the whole thing as fascinating as the other symptoms were depressing. Being down but not EVER able to cry??? Ridiculous. Fast forward to Sat afternoon January 12th in nearby Pasadena. I was sitting in the car while Yong-Mi was shopping when I received a text from our dear friend Oh No Murphy. (Oh No and Jim and Bob and the two of us had become fast friends, especially during this past calendar year). The text noted that she had found Bob in his home that morning. I immediately broke into real tears and sobbed like a baby. When Yong-Mi returned I could not speak clearly. INCOMPREHENSIBLE then AND now.
Bob's dry sense of humor?? UNMATCHED.
His charitable heart: UNMATCHED
His love of life: UNMATCHED
Each May we head back to Jamestown in time to serve with a few of our fellow Elks in preparing and serving lunch to the Special Olympics Athletes. I have considered all of us as THE A Team in that regard and each year each of us would report and stand in our long ago self-appointed position of responsibility in wrapping the foods etc etc. Bob stood next to Yong-Mi on my right. The event has been truly magical for all of us who have participated, if only account the lightheartedness midst the group as we handled our appointed tasks. It has been an honor and privilege to stand among these find folks and none finer than our dear and beloved friend and incredible Humanitarian Bob Finley. I find it hard to articulate how different it will feel without his presence there or at the Lodge.
God Bless you all in your loss of such a fine human being and family member. If there is a Memorial Service there in May, we will make every effort to attend; not 100% sure for this year we were thinking of doing the Special Olympics and then returning to LA until June and then back there for the Summer but hopefully we WILL be there to render a proper salute.
God Bless Always,
Don Jr and Yong-Mi

To the Family of Brother Finley:
We were sad to hear of Bob's passing. He was a good friend to all of us, his outgoing personality, warmth and caring will continue to live in our hearts and minds. We made him an honorary member of our group and documented the occasion with a picture of us all. It is displayed in our Masonic gathering place.
Bob is now in his eternal home there to received the rewards of a well spent life. Well done good and faithful servant.
