Obituary of Sally S. DeVine
Sally S. DeVine, 87, formerly of 102 School Ave., WE, passed away late Wednesday, July 31, 2019.
She was the widow of Edward V. "Ted" DeVine, whom she married December 31, 1957 and who died June 23, 2008.
Sally was born December 18, 1931 in Jamestown and was the daughter of the late Sven Henning and Ruth Irene Olson Swanson. A 1949 graduate of Jamestown High School, she then earned her BA in 1953 and MA in 1957 from Albany State.
Sally began her teaching career as a math teacher in the Pine Bush School District, taught next in Ripley, NY, and retired from Jamestown High School in 1988 where she taught Latin, Spanish and math.
Together with her husband Ted, she owned and operated the Putt-Putt courses at Chautauqua and in Lakewood for 25 years, where she enjoyed reconnecting and visiting with many former students and friends. Sally also had a strong connection to Chautauqua Institution, having worked at the Tally Ho during her younger college years and later enjoying summer visits with old friends.
A world traveler, as a chaperone as well as with family and friends, Sally's many journeys include South Africa, China, Sweden, Italy, Greece, the Panama Canal, Spain, Portugal and much of the Caribbean.
She was a member of the NEA, Chautauqua County Teachers Association and had belonged to Kidder Memorial United Methodist Church and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. Always very proud of her Scandinavian heritage, Sally also belonged to the Norden Women's Club, Thule and the Vikings.
Surviving are two sons: Bradley DeVine of Olmsted Falls, OH and Brian DeVine of Ashville, NY; and a grandson, Patrick DeVine and granddaughter, Kerry DeVine, both of Olmsted Falls.
Along with her husband, Ted, she was preceded in death by a brother, David Swanson.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, August 5th in the Lind Funeral Home. No funeral service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Rd., Jamestown, NY 14701.
