I remember when John and Donna met while we were working at JMI in the late 1960s! Their wedding was lovely and both John and Donna were so excited at their reception. It makes me happy to know that John had such a full life with music, education, community work and, most importantly, with Donna and their children. My thoughts are with Donna and the children and his family.

Fond memories of the Ireland Family with all of my visits to Ken and Ruth Mitchell’s house and Rock Hill. Mom (Toots) always talked about her neighbor and school friends like John. I’m sorry to hear of his early demise and struggle with cancer. Great loss for the community.

John was a great guy- in the few short years I've know him serving a a co Board member of NYCLASS I enjoyed his wit and delightful personality. He will be missed on the Board and I'm sure all his other friends and family. My condolences to all.

I had the blessing of knowing this guy....he was one of my mentors and my friends. He was always willing to help me in the world of school business and always made me feel welcome at any meeting. He always made me laugh and I respected him as a colleague. My thoughts and prayers are with your family as he is such a loss to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I was ever so saddened to read on Facebook about Mr. Irelands death. When we became friends on FB he told me "Trudy you can call me John" That always always felt weird to me, he will always be Mr. Ireland. As Jane said he was our 4th grade teacher, we were his first class. He used to play Leaving on a Jet Plane dont know when I will be back. That song forever reminds me of simpler times (we just didn't know it back then) What a great teacher , he left quite an impact on all of us, I think. His smile was infectious, but if you didn't do your work you were in big trouble. Rest in Peace Mr. John Ireland. The Heavens gained on heck of an Angel. My prayers to the Ireland Family.

My memories of John are of the young man who enthusiastically and ably served as my student teacher at Celoron Elementary School many years ago. He was the best student teacher I ever had and I’m not surprised that he went on to have a life full of service to others and the love and respect of his loved ones and his community. Mr. Ireland was my 4th grade teacher at Ashville Elementary. We were his first class. The first time we realized a teacher could be fun. He gave us tootsie rolls for 100’s on our spelling tests, occasionally let us watch the reel to reel movies on science subjects backwards, and we would hide in our coat closet to jump out and scare him. He was loved. I had the blessing to hear him play the organ at “my” church, Hurlbut UM. He was a wonderful man who will be missed. My sincere condolences.
