Last summer, Steve and Amy visited our Oregon home for a few days. We are in our mid-70s, and couldn't imagine why this young, vibrant couple would want to spend time with us; we felt young again in their presence. A wildfire earlier in the season closed some famous northwest Oregon hiking trails that they knew about and would have enjoyed, so Tom and I were looking forward to their return. Steve's passing is so very sad.

Steve was a quiet man with a big heart and a great love of animals. He was a fantastic husband to my sister, Amy, and I always admired their special relationship. He was a great support to our family when our dad, Ralph Whitney, died several years ago and in an uncannily similar manner. I am really saddened to have to say good-bye to my brother in law and even sadder for my sister, Amy, and the long healing she has in front of her.
