Bob was a great friend. He was a groomsmen in my wedding in 1979. We played chess and I'm sure I never won a game. He made everyone he knew a better person. I know I ticked him off at times. If he told me to go to hell, he made sure I enjoyed the trip. RIP my friend.

I had Mr. Doverspike for 10th grade English in the 1970's at JHS, and was not a very good student yet. I later had him for a literature class (novels) and fell in love with reading. He also made me a better student and was quick to congratulate me for my improvement. My love for reading has continued and has served me well in life. After a scary 10th grade class he became one of my favorite teachers and was a big contributor to my education.

To Bob's family: I have only know Bob from his membership in JCA and his attendance at concerts. He was always so enthusiastic about hearing wonderful musicians and encouraged us to keep spreading the word to attract bigger audiences. We miss his long-time membership support, his presence at performances and his unfailing exuberance. Also, my daughter-in-law, Michelle Muscarella Ulrich had Bob for her English teacher at JHS and she has very fond memories of him! Love and prayers to you all.

How wonderful to read these condolences and memories about Mr Doverspike They echo my feelings and thoughts of his talent and commitment as a teacher at Jamestown High School. I credit him with getting me through to graduation and so many other ways he taught us. I'm so sorry I never had a chance to thank him in person for all that he did. I certainly hope he knew how meaningful he was to so many people.

Mr. Doverspike was the director for 2 of our class plays. What a delight he was! He provided firm direction, but always with his impish sense of humor not far below the surface. I hope we expressed to him the depth of our gratitude and that he understood what a positive influence he had on our lives and our attitudes. He was a quiet hero.

My time as a student as Jamestown High School was highly enriched by the warmth and passion of Mr. Doverspike. He was not only one of my English teachers but also my home room teacher for the three years I was there. I greatly appreciated the extra time I spent with him and will always consider him a beloved teacher and a great personal influence. To his family and friends, you have my deepest sympathy.

Today, I attended the funeral and said goodbye to a good friend of mine, Bob Robert Doverspike. We worked side by side for many years trying to improve our neighborhood. Though at times it seemed like Sisyphus pushing the rock up the mountain, thanks to Bob’s perseverance, several abominations in the neighborhoods were demolished—-and our neighborhood blight was soon transformed into a moderately stable community. Bob was also instrumental in starting the Northside Community Garden. He bought and donated a double lot to our neighborhood group ( Northside Pride) and I’m proud to say that today the lot is a viable community shared green space! It’s not hyperbole to say Bob was a king among men. I will miss his brilliance, his mischief and all the good things he did for my family and for the community!

Mr. Doverspike was one of my favorite teachers. I loved that he used to say, "please enjoy this quiz, quizzes are meant for student enjoyment," before every quiz. I use this quote on my own students whenever I give a quiz, and have a little nostalgic moment of my time in his class.

Mr. Doverspike had a rare talent to inspire his students. He explained literature in a way that made me want to read. I remember reading The Great Gatsby for his class and he explained the billboard for eye glasses was symbolic of God watching everything. Such a little detail that had gone right over my head! I felt like when he helped us navigate a book we were reading, he could explain what the author was trying to communicate exactly the way the author would have wanted. He helped me long after I finished his classes and didn’t even know it! Even to this day Whenever I read a book I think how Mr Doverspike would interpret it. Thank you, Mr Doverspike, for making a difference in my life.

Mr. Doverspike was one of the finest teachers that I ever had the pleasure to know as a student. The first thing we did was MacBeth and to this day (39 years later), I still remember a significant portion of that play and many of the great Shakespearian lines. When placed in his class I was told how difficult it would be, but there were no spaces available with other teachers. I sure am glad that was the case and that I had the privilege of being one of his students. There are only a handful of teachers that really made a lifelong lasting impression on me and Mr. Doverspike was certainly one of them. He gave all of us confidence while learning what could have been a difficult subject. Those in heaven can now enjoy his teaching. RIP Mr. Doverspike and thank you for your contribution to my life.

Nothing compared to an English class with Mr. Doverspike at JHS. His wit, humor, personal connection was powerful and contagious. Being a student in his class was more than instruction- it was an experience and left a lifelong impression. I also had the privilege of becoming his neighbor when my husband and I moved back to Jamestown several years later. He had an amazing Japanese garden in his back yard and we enjoyed many chats about neighborhood revitalization. Sending love to all his family and friends.

A consummate professional who was a friend since we joined the JHS faculty in 1963. Talented, dedicated to the art of teaching, and a genuinely good, deeply caring and most decent person. His legacy will be forever embedded in the minds of students he taught and mentored, as well with his colleagues who, in so many ways, were impacted by the same qualities. I am fortunate to have had a chapter of my life knowing him.

Thank you for your dedication; rest in peace after a life well lived. My condolences to his family.

I haven't,seen Bob in a couple of years, but Charlie and I were both very fond of him. We lived a couple of years in his upstairs apartment and we all became good friends. I loved his sense of humor and his outlook on life. He had good taste in all things decorative and kept a beautiful home and garden.Knowing he's gone is a loss for us all.

Robert was my 11th grade English teacher. He was truly interested in knowing about my interests and those of my classmates. What I remember most about his class was his willingness to engage and debate us on matters unrelated to our curriculum. The interest of his students, whether wholesome or otherwise, would be debated before we took on our homework assignments. He was engaging and that made me want to do more than just come to class. RIP Robert.
