Obituary of Dorothy J. Turner
Dorothy J. Turner, 92, formerly of 801 Prendergast Ave., Jamestown, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019 at Heritage Village Rehab & Skilled Nursing.
She was the widow of Francis L. Turner, whom she married March 8, 1947 and who died May 8, 1990.
A lifelong area resident, Dorothy was born November 24, 1927 in Jamestown and was the daughter of the late Earl and Hazel Swan Champlin.
For 23 years Dorothy worked as a Teacher Aide for A Children's Place Daycare Center at First Presbyterian Church. Even after retiring, she loved and remembered the children by name, as did the children who remembered and loved "Mrs. Turner". Prior to her work at ACP, she was a 'stay at home' Mom, busy raising her five daughters.
Dorothy loved to travel with her husband, Fran, to visit their daughters in Albuquerque, Southampton, Long Island and New Hampshire. She had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories. Her favorite hobby was photography and she had taken thousands of pictures, always writing on the back of each one.
She also loved to dance, especially country and line dancing. Dorothy had traveled with her companion, Ed, to Nashville to appear on the Wildhorse Saloon Dance TV show.
She was also a member of the Vikings, Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, both Celoron Moose and American Legion, and the John Tiffany Post VFW.
Dorothy is survived by her companion of 26 years, Edwin Swan of Jamestown; and (5) daughters: Marsha Pollaro of Albuquerque, NM, Roxiann (Jody) Durstine of Sugar Grove, Pa., Lucinda (Kim) Minnier of Jamestown, Tina Corbett of Dover, NH, and Valerie (Gary) Piatt of Randolph. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; (36) great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Richard Champlin of Lyndonville, NY; and two sisters, Donna Neider of Frewsburg and Carol Sue Myers of Arizona.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Vullo; great-grandson, Gabrien Smith; son-in-law, Leonard Pollaro; brother, Earl Champlin, Jr.; and a sister, Joyce Merrill.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 27th in the Lind Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Lind's.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Jamestown Lions Club, P.O. Box 3683, Jamestown, NY 14702-3683.
