Although we shared the same last name, Paul and I were not related. He was, however, the best boss I ever had as I was his summertime hired man for several years in the late 50's. On one occasion, he left me in charge for several days while he attended a meeting in Ithaca. During that time, I succeeded in breaking one of his tractors in half. Long story! Hat in hand I reported to his home the morning after he returned expecting the worst. He, of course, was nothing but kind and gracious. It was a small, second-hand Allis Chalmers so he concocted (I'm sure) a story indicating it looked like that tractor had been broken and welded previously. He knew how terrible I felt. That event became the subject of many jokes between us over the ensuing years. He even kept me on for another summer or two before I graduated from college and went on to my teaching career. How many other people would have handled that situation in that manner? I knew Bob, Roger, Elaine and Nancy as little squirts in those days. My condolences go out to them and their children. I rode Paul's bus all my years at MG. His friendly face in the morning and friendly face in the afternoon were bright spots of every day and when I ran into him years later, it was the same friendly face and pleasant demeanor. He was obviously a man who loved life and people.
