I enjoyed ever so much our conversations together as coaches. Ralph was a great guy. You could tell just by conversing with him he was of outstanding character. I just wish that we would have had more time to talk.

You often hear people talk about that one teacher in your school career that has had an impact on your life. Well for me, Ralph Veights was that teacher! He was the only teacher/coach that ever took an interest in me. If I had never played football for him, I would never have gone to college, been a teacher, been a principal and had a professional career. It is an honor for me to plant a tree in memory of Coach Veights. I love and respect this man for the motivation and drive he has given to me throughout my lifetime and for that I will be forever grateful.

I want to express my deepest condolences to Bernie and the family. Ralph and Bernie have been mine and my husband's neighbors for 9 years now. My husband John passed a year ago and the Veights were always concerned for him through his long journey, always checking to see what they could do to help us. While we traveled away for John's treatment for a 7 week period, they took care of our mail and our apartment and coordinated things with my son when we needed things. Ralph and John enjoyed many great conversations. The two were the same type of men - warm and loving and interested in what was happening in the world. I will sure miss Ralph's sweet smile that he always had for me, especially since my husband passed. I hope I can help bring some comfort to Bernie during this difficult time. I am praying for the good Lord to bless her and all of their family with comfort and peace in the days, weeks and months ahead. .

Bernice and Family,
Please allow me to extend my sincerest and heartfelt condolences as you mourn the passing of Ralph. My memories with Ralph at Bethel Lutheran Church services and functions as well as the many great "chats" we had in the community whenever our paths joyfully crossed will be forever cherished. Ralph, like my dad, was a high school social studies teacher and coach; perhaps this is why I also felt a special connection with him. I will always remember Ralph for his warmth and kind-hearted nature as well as his ability to make you feel at ease during discussion.
May Our Father in heaven comfort you and give you His strength and peace during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers, and the thoughts and prayers of my wife and three children, are with each of you.
- Rich Kimball

If it weren't for Ralph and his co-tutor, Doug, my mentee, P, at Chautauqua Striders would not have graduated from high school. Ralph was endlessly positive and supportive, despite P's learning disabilities. At the time, CORE required all students to pass Regents Exams which for P was an impossible and demeaning task. As an after-school coordinator at Striders, I came to deeply appreciate Ralph's professional and personal commitment to all his students, his kind, gentle, yet firm approach, and his ever present smile. He made everyone who came in contact with him feel special. After we both left the organization, I'd run into Ralph and Bernice at Wegmans or Evans - He and I would laugh about our mutual love for bourbon. Ralph was more than a mentor, a coworker; he was an inspiration and a friend to me. I will miss him very much - Julie Dudgeon
