Obituary of Gilbert R. Wells

Gilbert R. Wells, 87, of Jamestown, passed away Monday April 27, 2020 in the VA Medical Center, Erie, PA. A lifelong area resident, he was born January 28, 1933 in Jamestown the son of the late Elizabeth C. Ernewein Wells. Gilbert attended the former Lakewood High School and was a US Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War. In earlier years, he was a professional Jockey, riding horses at Fort Erie, Lexington, and several other tracks. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses North Congregation. Gilbert loved country music and could play the organ, violin, and piano by ear. He will be remembered as a very generous and giving person. Surviving are his sister, Elsie Wells Nelson of Bemus Point, NY; his brother, William (Mary) Wells of Ashville, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his mother who died March 2, 1966, he was preceded in death by his step father, Charles W. Wells; his wife, Mary King Wells whom he married December 16, 1961 and who died March 30, 1991; an infant daughter Valerie on September 12, 1964; a brother, Marion A. "Nuck" Wells on June 14, 2016; and a brother-in-law, Richard A. "Dick" Nelson on June 7, 2018. Due to the current Coronavirus restrictions, a private service will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jehovah's Witnesses, 181 Martin Road, Jamestown, NY 14701; or Christ Lutheran Church LCMC, 3012 Route 430, Bemus Point, NY 14712.
