Obituary of John W. Mitchell
John W. Mitchell, Jr., 78, of 19 Muto Street, Lakewood, died Wednesday June 17, 2020, in his home.
An area resident all of his life, he was born December 8, 1941, in Jamestown, the son of the late John and Alice Spencer Mitchell, Sr.
He was a 1961 graduate of Southwestern Central School.
He was a veteran of the US Navy serving from 1961-65.
He was employed by Lutheran Social Services in the maintenance department. He had earlier worked for Dahlstrom Manufacturing and following retirement was a driver for Jamestown Public School System and Chautauqua Institution.
A longtime active member of the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Department, he was a member of the former AMVETS Post, enjoyed communicating on his Ham radio and volunteered as videographer for Southwestern Central High School Football.
Surviving are his wife Gladys Behrens-Mitchell; two children Mark (Dianne) Mitchell of Florida and Michele (Woodrow) King of Ashville; grandchildren Kurtis, Korry and Kolton Mitchell, Katelynn Elwood, Kacee Bewley, Bethany Starr and Lea Hallenbeck; sixteen great grandchildren; a sister Sharon Mitchell McCreary of Jamestown and Charles Grandin who John treated like a son.
He was preceded in death by a sister Janet Mitchell Clark.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
