I was very sorry to hear of Sam's passing, and my condolences go out to all of you in his family. I enjoyed getting to know Sam when we both were playing in the Jamestown Municipal Band. I enjoyed our conversations and appreciated his kind, humble demeanor (and his liberal viewpoints!) He was a true gentleman and will be missed by many, including me.

Gretchen, I'm sorry for your loss. Sam will be missed by many. I've missed seeing you at the store. I transferred to Mayville last year. I just lost my husband in June as well. It's hard to get use to the the quite. You have my condolences. As you know Sam performed Marty & mine wedding. It would have been 42 years in Aug. Take care, RubyAnn

Dear Mark and Sue,
I was so sorry to learn of your Dad's passing. It brings back many First Baptist memories. He was always so supportive of the community and I saw him at many community events in recent years. He continued to remain friends with my parents which I know they enjoyed. Loosing a parent is never easy and my heart goes out to you. Keep your memories close during the days ahead.
Love, Tammy (Harner) Pope

Many condolences to the Alesia family. My father did a lot of business with Sam back in the late 60s early 70s. He spoke very highly of him. So sorry for your loss. May his memory be for a blessing.

Sam was a role model for me at a pivotal time in my life. I served two years as JCC’s Student Trustee and had the privilege of his mentoring, kindness and friendship over the years. The world was a better place with Sam in it. Sending love and prayers for peace to Gretchen and her family.

The February 25, 1995 issue of Tempo, the P-J Saturday Family Magazine highlighted the adventures of Judge Sam Alessi, Jr. , his wife Gretchen, Chuck and Gussie Hendrickson who had joined a group of RV traveling Habitat for Humanity volunteers who helped build several homes in Georgia for families in desperate need of housing. Each family had been chosen by a Habitat committee that had assessed their need and capability of re-paying the 20 year no interest mortgage. The Alessi, Hendrickson “family” was headed by a single mother with four children. The family had suffered a fire that burned everything they owned; the mother was on dialysis and had been for several years. The P-J article was written by Judge Alessi, Jr. It contained several photos of the construction from laying the sod to presentation of the keys to the house and a Bible to the new owner. The family was home for Christmas.
The article also contained an insert entitled “Volunteer Experience Sparks Surprise Meeting for Judge”. The insert reads as follows:
“Throughout the years of fighting the political battles that we enjoyed, Joe Gerace, now a State Supreme Court Judge, mentioned many times to me that he had an uncle who was a Federal District Court Judge in Georgia. On Saturday, as we were finishing up the project, I had gone to the lunch tent for a break and one of the local volunteers said, “That fellow over there is a Federal District Court Judge. Would you like to meet him?” “Sure!”, I said, and we walked for introductions. He looked at my nametag and said “Alessi” – I know the Alessis. They had an office on the corner of Main and Second Streets!” How did you know that?”, I asked, puzzled. “ Why”, he said, I’m from Jamestown”. Then it dawned on me. “You must be Joe Gerace’s uncle!” I was right. We then saw the Hon. Anthony Alaimo, Federal District Court Judge, maneuver a wheelbarrow full of rather pungent mulch – it came from a pig farm – that we were spreading as a base for the sodded lawn we were installing.”

Sam was one of the nicest people I have ever known. I had the honor of working with him in the early 1970s. He was the City Court Judge, and I worked for the probation department. He was a fair and kind judge and became a good friend.

This picture is from the Greek festival in June 2016. Hap and I enjoyed immensely spending time with them, and made a promise to do this every year. Circumstances prevented that. I am so sorry for this loss....he was certainly an upstanding man. He will be missed.

My condolences to Sam’s family. As an attorney I appeared before him many times in City Court. In the late 70s I was a member of the Public Defender’s Office and I always felt he acted with fairness to the clients I represented and with the utmost integrity. As the years went on we we became friends—-seeing one another at various JCC events where my wife taught as well as bar association and social gatherings. He was a good person and his passing is a loss to the entire community. John K. Plumb
