I knew Jerry at Jefferson Jr. HS and at JHS. We dated for a while. He was just so kind and so darn much fun. A true gentleman in every way. I still think of him often. Although I did not return to Jamestown often or attend many class reunions, when I did I always looked for Jerry's face. So sad to know he is now gone. A good man lost. My deepest sympathy to his family, and to all who loved him. Carol Asquith Donahue, Fort Collins Colorado

It's been years since I rented a house behind Lighthouse grocery but I do remember Jerry coming to my rescue at times from snow blowing in a blizzard so I could get out the driveway and the road- to being a good neighbor. I think Kristen was in high school then. There is security in having law enforcement for a neighbor. Enjoyed seeing the schnauzer dogs out in the yard.
He was well respected in the neighborhood. We shared the same opinion of Ripley which I can't post but I remember what he said still. Sure he'll be missed by many.
My sympathies to the family.
Sincerely
DeaAnna Wheeler

In a funeral service I attended some 20 years ago the Rev. Mary L. Krahn of St. Mark Lutheran Church reminded us of this passage of scripture we were to use to measure our lives:
With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow myself before God on high?
He has told you, O mortal, what is good:
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:6,8)
There is no doubt that in a very real way Jerry devoted his life to doing justice. He was an outstanding public servant.

It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my friend, mentor, partner in crime (fighting), protector, advisor, and confidant.
The first day I stepped foot into the Sheriff’s Office you were there. An intimidating man physically, but soft spoken and kind. A man with an incredible history of public service. Joining the Air Force out of high school and serving your country and then your community for the majority of your adult life.
Very few will ever know how much heartbreak and tragedy you witnessed in your career. How much you put into doing what was right and risking your own life to protect those you were sworn to serve.
I know of no other person in the history of the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office who served in every rank. A deputy who was promoted to sergeant. A criminal investigator, who was promoted to Patrol Lieutenant, then you were appointed as Patrol Captain, then Undersheriff. You served as Acting Sheriff until I was sworn into office as Sheriff. During your time as acting Sheriff you faced many significant challenges that I know kept you awake at night. It was my honor and privilege to have you continue as my Undersheriff. Your decades of experience guided me as a new Sheriff. You knew so much about the agency, the county, and those that lived here. You amazed me with your ability to remember people. But it was not just individuals you could recall, it was their families, associates, and connections.
You loved your family more than anything. I have vivid memories of you talking about them and deservingly glowing with pride when you spoke of your wife and children. I relied on you for advice and counsel often. You pulled back on my reins when I was charging ahead too fast and injected your wisdom and experience. Never a “yes” man but rather someone who was never afraid to politely, and respectfully, inject your option.
You had a tremendous sense of humor, and a contagious smile and laugh. A true gentle giant.
You were, as the expression goes, as honest as the day is long and you embodied all that one could wish for in a friend: wisdom, warmth, fairness, honesty, generosity, and compassion. You were soft spoken, but firm; gentle, yet tough minded.
I owe you tremendous gratitude for all that you did for me personally, for the county and our country.
“And we feel a thousand times richer for having had you cross the paths of our lives, but, God knows, you will be missed.
Goodbye, Jerry.
You are now like the wind; we cannot see you …we will always feel you.” *
Sheriff Joe Gerace (Ret)

Dear Sally and Family: I was so sorry to learn of Jerry's passing. As you know, my John worked many years with Jerry and I worked with him for a few years as well. Jerry was always kind and would go the extra mile for anyone. He was always a gentleman to me and John considered him a good friend. So many of the "old guys" are up in Heaven now. My thoughts and my prayers will be with you all in the days and weeks ahead. May the good Lord bring you peace and comfort, and may your many wonderful memories help you to heal in the months ahead.
