Wendy Nelson posted a condolence
Sunday, December 20, 2020
In the Fall of 2017 I had the privilege to meet Betty through a volunteer organization, Love Inc. Betty needed assistance raking leaves from her backyard, bagging them, then placing the bags at curb side. In years to come my grandson, Nicholas would go with me and we would rake leaves and get them curbside. I took her to doctor and dentist appointments, purchased groceries for her, and we would occasionally go to breakfast through the years.
Betty had no children, siblings, or family, but did have a good friend Gloria, and her beloved cats, Meme - a Siamese being her favorite. When leaf raking was over I continued going to Betty's once a week and did some cleaning for her - then she would say "Can you sit down and visit?" She spoke of being a nurse for over 30 years and living on Broadhead Avenue for 50 years, and at the time of her death it was 53 years, perhaps 54 now. Oh, how sad Betty was because over the years her neighborhood had deteriorated and wasn't safe or clean anymore.
She was a very sweet, kind, and loving lady who was always up-to-date in current events which we always discussed. Then she would reminisce about her life growing up on the corner of Forest Avenue and Howard Street, in a humble home that her dad had built after loosing the first home he built for them on Lakeview and lost during the depression.
Unfortunately you were hospitalized then sent to Heritage and we could not see each other anymore due to Covid-19. It was a honor helping you, listening to your stories, and praying with you these past few years. You will be forever in my heart.
Agape Love, Wendy Nelson
