Obituary of Anthony Marino

On January 13, 2021 Anthony "Rocky" Marino, 74, of Jamestown, NY passed away at UPMC Chautauqua after a long battle with heart disease. He was born October 29, 1946 in Jamestown, the son of the late Sebastian and Angela Crasti Marino. Rocky was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Jamestown as a letter carrier from 1968 to 1992. After graduating from Jamestown High School in 1964, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1966 to1968. He was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Combat Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, New York State Conspicuous Service Award, Expert Badge with Auto Rifle Bar and Rifle Bar, and Sharpshooter Badge with Pistol Bar. Rocky was associated with the Herman Kent Post 777 American Legion, DAV, Jamestown Vietnam Veterans Assoc., Fish Club and the Elks Lodge. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Bills Mafia and the Buffalo Sabres. He loved golfing, gardening, and watching the deer in his backyard. Rocky is survived by his two daughters, Naomi Leach and Shannon (Doug) Phelps, both of Florida; five grandsons: Mike, Chad and Dominic Marino, and A.J. and Corey VanDorn; sisters, Donna Wood of Erie and Sandra (John Ciancio) Nelson of Jamestown, and brother, Tom (Karl Costello) Marino of Jamestown; and his longtime close friend, Diana Nidiffer. Also surviving are a nephew, Perry (Carlee)Wood and niece, Danielle (Tom) Jakobic of Erie; great nieces and nephews: Isabella & Alex Wood and Mackenzie, Addison & Maximus Jakobic; aunts, Helen (John) Damond, Rita Ellis and Linda (Cliff) Graham; as well as several first cousins. He loved his Sheltie companion, Fannie! Rocky's philosophy in life followed Hunter Thompson's quote who believed: 'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, a beer in one hand, chips in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "Wow, what a ride!"'. Following strict guidelines for social distancing, friends will be received in a walk-through manner from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Masks are required at all times. Again observing social distancing, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell Duffy will be celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society or the American Heart Association.
