Obituary of Sandra L. Schmitter
Sandra L. Schmitter, 86, of High Acres, Bemus Point, NY, passed away at 8:08 pm Tuesday, May 4, 2021, in UPMC Chautauqua.
An area resident since 1984, she was born January 5, 1935 in Angola, NY, a daughter of the late Theodore F. and Josephine A. Barnwell LeVeque.
Sandra was a graduate of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo, NY, earning a degree as a registered nurse.
Before moving to Safari Campground in Dewittville, NY, she was an ICU registered nurse for Buffalo Mercy Hospital for 25 years and retired from WCA Hospital in Jamestown as a registered nurse in the dialysis unit.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bemus Point and St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church, Mayville, NY. She was also a member of the Ingjald Lodge 65, Independent Order of the Vikings and was a strong advocate for educating people about the risks of Reyes Syndrome, a disease that affected her late daughter Jeanine. In her spare time she enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandkids. She was a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan, win or lose you could hear her cheering them on from miles away, a passion like no other! Surviving is her daughter and caregiver, Christine (Phil) Bajdo of Mayville, NY, a son, James T. Kayko of Rochester, NY, seven grandchildren, Cory (Mary) Brauch of Orchard Park, NY, Kyle (Gretchen) Brauch of Pittsburgh, PA, Matthew (Desiree) Kayko of NC, Erin Kayko of Savannah, GA, Bradley (Amy) Nathan of Eden, NY, Tristan Nathan of Colden, NY, Jeffrey Bajdo (her baby) of Mayville, NY, nine great grandchildren and a brother, Theodore LeVeque of Lockport, NY.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. "Safari Bob" Schmitter, whom she married June 22, 1984 and who died July 12, 2017, and two daughters, Jeanine Kayko and Michelle Kayko Nathan. The strength of Sandy for all that she had been through was remarkable to others around her.
A private service and celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will not be observed. Inurnment for both Bob and Sandra will be in the Nativity Cemetery, Orchard Park, NY.
