Obituary of Lois E. Almeter
Lois E. Almeter, 85, formerly of Bemus Point, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. She joins her husband of 61 years, Nelson Almeter in eternal peace.
Lois was born on November 1, 1935 to George and Bethel (Baker) LaWall in Cowlesville, N. Y. She graduated from Attica High School in 1952 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Saint Lawrence University in 1956. She and Nelson were married in September that same year. Together, they raised a family of five surviving children and their families: son, Randy Almeter and his children, Stephanie, Diana (Austin) Bradley, and Kelly (Justin) Skerpan; son, Ron (Barbara Fay) Almeter and their children, Kelly, Jason and Kaitlynne Almeter; Mitchell (Stephanie) Almeter and their sons, Caleb and Zachary Almeter; Craig (Tammy) Almeter and their daughters, Emily and Nicole Almeter; and Penny (Daniel) Cavallaro and their children, Danny and Justina (Cameron) McSain. She is also survived by her brother, Gerald (Bonnie) LaWall, lately of Fredrick, MD.
Lois's formative years growing up on a family farm in Wyoming County with brothers Gerald and George Jr. cultivated a strong work ethic, deep loyalty to family and community, and abiding belief in God's tender mercies. She imparted those ingrained values to her family and lived by a creed of charity and respect toward all and a deep sense of social responsibility and personal accountability. Her formidable work ethic, keen intellect and public service interests guided her through a career entailing a succession of positions in municipal, county and federal civil service. While raising her five children in Spencerport, NY, she served in executive assistant roles to several elected officials including the Ogden Town Supervisor, Monroe County Executive, and as staff assistant to former Congressman Frank Horton. After Lois and Nelson put their children through college and prepared them for varied careers, they pivoted from the hectic tempo of raising a family and demanding pace of public service administration to a more relaxed lifestyle of nurturing grandchildren and pursuit of community service activities. In 1993, they moved to their retirement home in Bemus Point where Lois was able to pursue long-deferred interests in travel, gardening, bridge and political activism. While she enjoyed many and varied interests throughout her life, nothing brought her greater pleasure nor revealed her enduring passions more so than nurturing her children and grandchildren. She was the safe haven from which her family unfailingly found strength, courage and love.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on August 6, 2021 at 12 p.m. at St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bemus Point, NY. Visitation will not be observed.
