Dear Family of Mary,
My sincere sympathy to you all on Mary’s passing. I got to know her as a supervisor at Caregiver’s when we worked together and very much enjoyed our medical focused conversations.
Sincerely,

I am sorry due to some commitments I was unable to come to attend Mary's services. I worked with Mary in my role as VP at Filling the Gap which had the New Vision Services program under its auspices. Mary was always key to our successes as well as getting us through our challenges. Her dedication to the consumers of our program was awe inspiring. She was always willing to do whatever it took to enhance our services. She took her role as a staff educator as seriously as any nurse I ever met, always making sure our PCA staff were well equipped for their jobs. I remember often talking with her about families and her immediate family reminded me of the large families of great grandparents. On a personal note, one time I showed Mary a recipe for a chocolate chip/marshmallow pie. She asked for a copy. Two days later she walked into my office and set down the pie on my desk. That perfectly describes Mary's giving spirit. I am confident that when she passed from this Earth she was directed to the express lanes into Heaven. God's blessings to her entire family.

I was sad to hear through our daughter, Jennifer May, that Mary had died. I believe the Holy Spirit had something to do with Mary and I being the first nurses to work at Hospice Chautauqua County. Mary worked oncall at nights and I did the day shift as we got things rolling and then could hire additional nurses. Raising 9 children gave Mary the consummate caregiving skills she used in caring for those dying at home. Many of our early patients were dying of AIDS and Mary used her gifts and calling to give compassionate care to ALL of our patients. That's who Mary was.
It's not by coincidence that Mary was inexplicably on my mind the other day - before I learned of her passing. Having worked for 10 years at Hope Hospice here in SWFL, I've come to appreciate the mysteries of death and dying and believe Mary may have brushed my heart as she parted this world to be with Jesus. I feel blessed to have known her and worked with her.
May God comfort all who mourn her passing and special hugs to her husband and children. PJ May

Mrs. Degnan, as she was known to me, always had an element of magic to her. As an adult looking back with a more logical understanding I now realize what that magic was; a woman who ushered people away from suffering, her comfort and peace feeling ethereal. As a child however, I just felt the magic. I remember once attending church with the Degnan family. I am not sure If I had gone on my own with their family, or if I had just requested to sit with them, as their welcoming spirit was felt throughout the holy space. Mrs. Degnan made sure I sat next to her. All throughout mass, she held my hand, explained responses and kept me focused. Finally when the priest opened the Tabernacle before the blessing of the Eucharist and Communion, she leaned over (not much) and whispered, "keep your eyes on that tabernacle, while it is open you can see the angels in there", I tell you, I didn't blink once. I will never forget staring at that little gold box. In retrospect, I really think the angel was sitting next to me, holding my hand. All my love to the Degnan Family, from my experience, you all have so much of her in you. I hope you know how much she and your whole family are loved by those who's lives you have touched.

Thinking of the Degnan family during this time of great loss. I remember Mary as a devoted and loving Hockey Mom when our sons were playing hockey together. Her devotion to her family and then to a long and caring career as a nurse will be lovingly remembered by many. Mary touched so many lives with her love and care.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing! I knew her first as a hockey mom! Our paths crossed again when my brother had suffered a stroke. She was an in home nurse for him. She showed him kindness and respect. She treated him as if she were his mom. He really liked her.
