A really kind and intelligent man. We were Phillip's neighbors for many years and always enjoyed his company.

Philip was a kind, sacrificial man whom I will always remember with fondness. Both as a child and later as an adult he consistently encouraged and supported me during the times I would visit.
As a child I will always remember the lovely book on Astronomy he lovingly sent at Christmas to me.
15 years ago I recall his kindness towards myself and my son Noel on our trip to the Children's Science Museum in Boca Raton.
And just 5 years ago, while visiting him at his long time home near Jamestown ( I had been on a medical assignment nearby and we had made a plan for me to visit) , I recall his taking me around town, showing me the Chautauqua Institute and other sites, and showing me once again his loving and caring demeanor. He was always a superb host.
I hope to see him in Heaven.

Phil was a classmate at the old Washington Junior High before he headed off to Gunnery. We met up with each other again after our military service and enjoyed many good conversations together. He had an exemplary life.

I will always recall Phil fondly. No one could strike up a conversation about almost any topic like him. His knowledge of science and how to interest young people in it was second to none. As a fellow Panama teacher I never heard a bad word of him from student, co-worker or boss. A very highly regarded person seemingly in all aspects of life. Phil could potentially be seen at any girls or boys HS basketball game in the county (normally on the top row of bleachers until recent years). Loved seeing kids grow and compete for the shear joy of it.

My wife, Linda, worked with Phil at Panama Central School where I first came to know him. Upon his retirement from PCS, I worked with Phil at Chautauqua Golf Club for 15 years. I remember getting "the call" many times when Phil would substitute teach at Panama. I worked the early shift at the club, he would be scheduled for the afternoon shift. "Can you stay a little longer if I teach?" the call would go. Of course, I would, there was no turning him down, everyone knew that Phil would do anything for anyone at any time. Phil could be a rather private person, unless you were as fortunate as me, who came to know him as a close friend. If you had time, his countless life stories were priceless. Our conversations on how to make changes to the world were endless.
Phil mentored the junior golf program at Chautauqua for many years. He came to be known as Uncle Phil to the kids and golf course staff. Golf was a passion and kids were at the forefront, as always. The little 'rub on the noggin' and words of encouragement were always present.
I will miss our conversations and discussions on all manner of topics. I will miss stopping by his house to bring him fresh blueberries. I will miss going out to lunch where he would tell the server, "Separate checks, please". All the while with me knowing Phil as a most generous, kind and thoughtful person.
To a life well lived, Phil Magnuson, may you Rest in Peace.

Phil's calm demeanor, request for curtesy, and his love of children made him a wonderful educator. A recent conversation with Phil reflected a sharp mind, a continued concern for others, and an appreciation for his life well lived. He will be missed.

Where to start? I meet Phil while I was attending Panama school in 5th grade he was my science teacher. He convinced me to join the basketball team which he coached me in 5th and 6th grade. I moved back to Jamestown in 7th grade but he never forgot about me. I started mowing the yard with him at that time. He picked me up every Thursday to help him with the yard work and every Sunday to go bowling then hit McDonald’s then back to his house to watch the bill’s game. When I went to high school at Jamestown I was still playing basketball and he attended every game even on the other side of Buffalo. He brought me on many excursions but my favorite was North Carolina basketball camp my 11th and senior year. When I graduated I moved to Florida but still never let me go lol. He visited me many times in Florida and attended my wedding. When my son was born it put a smile on his face because now he had a grandson. He stuck with me over all my good and bad times! 3 years ago he started emailing me Monday through Friday at 7:00 am and he never missed any day. I could go on for days so cutting it short. I wouldn’t be the man that I am today without Phil Magnuson great man/ father/ grandfather. Love you always your son Jason

Phil was an outstanding person and was great to talk to. He loved coming to Panama basketball games and we had a chair for him at the end of our bench. He was always positive to the players and coaches. He had an infectious laugh and smile. He will be missed.

I was Phil's librarian for the past several years at the Ashville Free Library. He was a voracious reader and I truly enjoyed getting him the books he wanted. He was also my kids' science teacher at Panama. They all liked having him. I will miss our chats at the library. He always brought a smile to my heart. RIP my friend.
