Dear family of Don Walter,
I was very sorry to hear of Don Walter’s death and may I offer my sincere condolences to his family from someone who sang in his church choir in the 1980’s and 90’s. When I first heard of Don’s death I was (and am) very sad, but I also started to smile thinking of many good memories.
I met Don in 1978 on a Sunday when I tiptoed into The Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco to check it out. I loved the music and the choir right away. A few weeks later that I went up to the organ after worship and introduced myself and he warmly invited me to come sing with the choir. A couple of months later I did just that, more than a year before I joined the church. I am glad that I had the pleasure of singing in Don’s choir for many years.
Don was a wonderful conductor of sacred choral music. He was able to teach, conduct, encourage and inspire his group of enthusiastic amateurs. In those years, we numbered about thirty singers in four robust (unruly?) sections, and he could pick out just about every note! (and make gentle suggestions). Thursday night rehearsals were relaxed and enjoyable. He selected our music with care and intelligence - old favorites, sacred classics, new and challenging works, and special original compositions. One of these was a lovely piece called “Lullaby” which he composed for our choir. I still have my copy of the music, handwritten by him, saved among my special souvenirs, 30 years later.
The pleasure in singing in Don’s choir was always greatly enhanced by his partnership with our wonderful organist Jane Brooks. They made a great pair and worked together faithfully, with humor and dedication and great love of sharing music with others for many years. They were down-to-earth and outgoing and good friends to their singers and to the whole congregation.
I met his wife, your mother, aunt, grandma and great-grandma), only once at a crowded reception, so I can’t say that I knew her. However, I did know about his loving care for her and faithfulness for many years during her illness. I am sure that is a great comfort to think about. I really liked the picture you picked out. I can see the younger Don Walter in that picture, but it is also good to see how he looked in later years, still a handsome, sweet-natured man with a very kind face.
There are a half dozen active members still around at Mount Kisco who fondly remember him with thanksgiving for his gifts. We send you our best wishes as you celebrate his long life.

Thank you, Kaethe. The choir and church at Mount Kisco were a huge part of my Dad's life. He had such a passion for choral music and was so appreciative of the members of his choir. I have so many dear memories growing up in the early years with Lee Fairchild and then Jack. Although my hearts aches, I am so lucky to have had such a great father who made such an impact on so many lives.

Dear Walter Family, I am sorry for your loss. I sang in Mr. Walter's Chorus at Fox Lane Middle School from 1985-1987. He was passionate and intense and somehow motivated us to reach his high musical expectations. Being in school plays (Happy Birthday Liberty, Meet my Camp) that he directed were some of my best memories from that time. And I was lucky enough to be among a group of students that he drove in a school bus across New York State to camp at his property in Jamestown to experience the cultural wonder of the Chautauqua Institution and the beauty of western NY. We had so much fun! He was an incredible teacher and very well loved.

The people of the Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco offer their condolences to the family of Don Walter and we give thanks for all in him that was good and kind and faithful. While the number of folks who remember Don is small, his impact on the life of this church remains large. He would have loved to play the new Von Beckerath organ we installed in 2008. May your memories of his music and his love for family give you comfort in the days ahead.

Pastor, Presbyterian Church of Mount Kisco

Don was the Best Man at our wedding and there was no more fitting title. He was a best man in every way. We always left a visit with Don feeling the warmth of his love.

Don Walter was My father-in-law. That is truly an understatement. He was so much more than that to me. For the last 40 years He was my mentor, and a lot of who and what I have become is due to him. I loved how We used to pull pranks on each other. I will miss him, but I know he is in Heaven with his beloved Mary Lou and his daughter Lynette. I love you Don for everything that you have done for me

Sorry to here of passing of Uncle Don.I have fond memories of him when I was a child.
He was always kind and humorous and always took time to make me feel special and loved.
His ghost stories told in a dark bedroom on a bed full of giggling cousins is one of my fond memories.
Another memory was him taking us all to New York City.
The Statue of Liberty,Empire State Building and Union Station were a few of our stops that will always remain with me.
His love of family and music were always very high on his priorty list.
He will forever be in my heart and good memories.
I'm sure he is now with Aunt Marry Lou catching up on the years since her passing.
Sending our love to you all.

To the extended Walter Family...we are saddened at the news of Don's passing. We fondly called him "The Maestro" when we spoke with him or stopped to see him at Hemlock Hollow. We knew him as a passionate musician, an "inn keeper", a lover of children, and dear friend. Don's beloved Hemlock Hollow was the site of our wedding in 2006. When we approached Don about having our wedding in his beautiful setting he agreed without hesitation. It is a time we will always remember...especially when Don reached into his many cupboards to find glass jars that the children in attendance could catch fire flies in.
We recall his caring for Mary Lou in her last years and his deep love for her throughout that difficult time.
Men of his stature who show humility, compassion, and a genuine interest in those around them are giants we will all miss.
Our sincerest heartfelt condolences to you all.
