Obituary of Leon R. Covey

Leon R. "Butch" Covey, 75, of Niobe, NY, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, in UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, PA. An area resident for most of his life, Butch was born July 24, 1946, in Jamestown, NY, a son of the late Eugene G. and Dorothy I. Ecker Covey. He attended Panama Central School. Butch was employed for many years by the Laborers Union and was on the crew that constructed the Chautauqua Lake Bridge. He spent many years in Cleveland, Ohio and returned to Niobe to care for his mother and remain close to his family. He was a member of the Panama Fire Department in his early years. He attended Sunday services at Watts Flats United Methodist Church, Niobe Baptist Church and at times traveled over to the Ivory Baptist Church in Frewsburg to hear Pastor Donald Reese deliver his sermon. Butch loved to cook, bake, and can/freeze fresh fruits and vegetables and truly excelled in doing so. He often shared the fruits of his labor with his family and friends which we will all surely miss. He passed his love of cooking on to his oldest niece Tammy, and his oldest nephew Tim who often watched over and cared for him when he would allow it. As we all know, he loved talking to his family and friends daily on the phone to see "what was going on". Butch is survived by his sister, Cheryl Taylor of Manning, SC, and several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sandra L. Covey, Patricia A. Covey, and a great nephew. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery, Niobe, NY. The family wishes to extend their extreme gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the entire Trauma I.C.U. Team at UPMC Hamot in Erie, PA for administering truly unbelievable care, not only to Butch 24/7 but to Tim and Tammy on a daily basis while they were there.
