In memory of my dear friend and confidante. I have so many memories of us working together at the World Bank - both times! As kindred spirits we shared many world views. Kathy was well loved among the Bank staff - quite a feat to accomplish! My condolences to the family on the loss of such a unique example of humanity.

I remember when Kathy brought that stand-up of JFK to the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment (CSE) and then spoke on that topic at a Sunday service. She also spoke on the topic of the British slogan "Keep Calm and Carry On". A good slogan for life! She was smart, creative, full of fun and love! I missed her terribly when she moved to NY.

Kathy was pure kindness and love. She used her many talents and abilities to benefit others and always led with an open heart. She was an ordained Spiritualist minister and walked her talk. Those of us who knew her from church at the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment, NSAC in Falls Church, VA missed her terribly when she returned to Jamestown, but our loss was a gift to her family there. And now that she has left this earth, I know that she is a gift to the Spirit World. We miss her terribly but know that we will see her again. And she will be only a whisper away till then. We love you Kathy!

I first met Kathy when she attended a Spiritualist church service in the DC area. What stood out about Kathy immediately was her bright spirit, her keen intellect, fine sense of humor and her ability to connect with people. She was a thoughtful listener who always had something insightful and uplifting to offer, including heartfelt hugs.
Kathy was a person of utmost integrity. She did what she could to make a positive difference in the world. She was a born minister with a deep compassion for human suffering. She was the ultimate diplomat with the ability to navigate challenging situations with grace and kindness.
Kathy adored her family. When she left the Washington, DC area to move back to her hometown to help take care of her mom, she followed a deep calling of the heart. Kathy knew what really mattered. She felt blessed that she had the past few years living near her beloved family.

Kathy Sydney Riley was one of the best people I have had the pleasure to know in my 62 years on this planet. Her determination, attention to detail, and sense of humor made her one good coworker and one adored friend. Kathy and I met while working for Hospice of the National Capital Region, here in DC. She was in tech and I was the office manager, but soon found myself in that same tech department. Kathy and I immediately bonded, as many did with Kathy. It was in these year that Kathy found she had Ovarian Cancer. She had a fender bender car accident, and in checking her out, the cancer was found. We celebrated that car accident, it saved Kathy’s life. Kathy made me want to be a better human, always. I will cherish every memory for the rest of my life as I know we all will.

Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it
Some people are just magical. In the world of television, the writers of the Mary Tyler Moore show tried to convey with the opening lines of the show’s theme song, above, that MTM was one of those people. Well, for those of us who had the honor of being one of Kathy’s friends and/or coworkers, we know the truth. Kathy was magical. She could turn the world on with her smile.
After 20-something years of friendship, I have nothing but happy memories of our times together in the DC metro area. Aside from enjoying much of DC’s culture, restaurants and home cooked veggie meals together, much of my time with Kathy was spent exploring Spiritualism. She introduced me to the church, and we attended a weekly group discussion together every Wednesday evening for a couple of years. While I only ever dipped in a toe, Kathy embraced Spiritualism with all her being and I was proud of her dedication and impressed with her achievements – culminating with becoming an ordained minister. “Minister Kath” was the embodiment of Love Thy Neighbor. She showered her friends with love, attention, affection and the best hugs (as many here have commented). While I grieve the loss, I know Kathy’s work here was done. And what a fantastic job she did.

Kathy was not only one of my favorite people in the world, but she was one of my favorite fellow Baby Boomers. Our cultural frames of reference were similar, our senses of humor meshed, and she unfailingly laughed at my "You had to be there" jokes -- with "there" being curled up on a sofa in front of a TV set sometime in the 1960s or '70s. When Stephen Sondheim died last year and footage surfaced of him cleaning up on a "Password" episode in glorious black and white, for instance, I immediately knew with whom to share it. Years earlier, when it was announced that the 50th anniversary of The Beatles' first American concert at the old Washington Coliseum in D.C. would be marked with an outdoor, cover-band concert in the ruins of that soon-to-be-demolished structure on a wickedly frigid night in February 2014, Kathy was my enthusiastic date.
I loved her yeah yeah yeah when I saw her teeth-chatteringly standing there that night. I loved her before that and after that, too. As John, Paul, George and Ringo are my witnesses, I will love her for as long as I live.
Kathy was unfailingly kind, thoughtful, smart, loyal, and a plethora of other wonderful things. But let's not forget, she absolutely rocked.

Kathy was my closest friend for the last 30 years. Like others, there are just too many memories to share here. Here are just some highlights. Kathy and I met and became friends when we both worked at SOME, So Other Might Eat. Every Thursday night after work, we would go to Politics and Prose, an independent book store that had a cafe and we would drink coffee and talk for hours about love and life. And, we also felt it best that we both have dirty hair so if that morning happened to be a wash hair day - we held off. Kathy and I shared a love for movies, especially the Toy Story series. After the end of Toy Story 2, we would stand up and and shout Toy Story 3, Toy Story 3 not caring about the leaving audience members looking at us. Two very special memories are when Nola treated Kathy and her new friend, Trudy, to a weekend in Williamsburg, VA and one other weekend when Nola came to DC with a friend and Kathy insisted that the four of us had to experience a Renaissance Festival. Kathy's love was unconditional especially when it came to her love for the Volkswagen Beetle. It didn't matter what kind of a clunker the car was, if Kathy could afford it, she wanted it. I think we are all so lucky that she felt the same away about people. No matter how imperfect we are, she loved us unconditionally. My heart goes out to Nola, Laura and the rest of the family. In our shared heartbreak, we are all here for you.

I would like to offer condolences to the Jamestown friends and family of Kathy. I’m an old Washington, DC housemate and friend. Kathy was always so much fun to toss ideas around with and laugh - books, science, the occasional movie star idea to hold a mini fan club - cinema festival at home and drum up more laughs. The impressive thing about Kathy was that she was always fun to be with even if a particular day sent her health, housing, or other complications that would bring a lesser person down. She always found the upside. I have been remiss in thinking we had plenty of time to get together again, so I will miss Kathy. There must be a special place for workaholics with a sense of humor, right? Barbara Bush

I believe I only met Kathy once — and it was at your house, Barbara. I had just moved to DC, I was about 26 years old. I honestly spent the better part of the next 10 years hoping I would see her again. Kathy was a star! And her Honda Civic, we’ll, let’s just leave it at that. May Kathy Rest In Peace.

Kathy has been worlds best neighbor since she and Nola moved next door. The absolute kindest woman with genuine happiness every time I saw her. I could go on and on but I’ll just touch on the highlights. When I gave birth to our son she came over with personalized jewelry boxes for each family member. We love them and use them everyday! After I told her about our trip to Ithaca and how much our family loved it she went and bought our whole family Ithaca is gorges T-shirts as seen below. She would tell me about her education at Cornell there and a variety of other fun things she did. Over the years my kids would bring her and Nola cookies we baked and she always loved that! My daughter Julia walked Shelby routinely and miss Kathy always trusted her and gave her a confidence to eventually start a dog walking business in our neighborhood in which Shelby was always her favorite! The picture below is a sign Kathy printed out for the girls first day of school this past September 2022. My younger daughter, Julia would stop by to see Kathy every couple days after school to just chat with her about her day. Kathy gave her such a space to be heard, always so loving. Our entire family misses Kathy immensely and will need to figure out a new normal of not seeing her everyday next door. Please pass on these memories to her family. Our hearts are broken, especially Julia who looked forward to visiting with Kathy and Shelby all the time. She has a very special place in our hearts and memories. Love, Pete and Lindsey Johnson. Lilly, Julia and Henry.

I am blessed and lucky to have been friends with Kathy, one of the best people I will ever know. I remember first meeting her when Emily interviewed her; she was wearing a blue denim peasant dress and Timberland boots and Emily had to meet her because her resume listed her interests as "reading, writing and recycling". Her powerful hugs that made you feel like the most special person in the world. Her chuckle and the twinkle in her eye when she was amused or up to something. Her care in remembering every detail about her friends, and thinking of ways to surprise and delight them. (This photo is typical Kathy - celebrating someone else's gift!) Her humility when in fact she was the superstar. I'm so sad and so grateful to have such a role model and friend.

Imagine 2 little girls being late for school because they stop to look at a caterpillar. That was my friendship with Kathy Riley. We met when we were just toddlers, and had a lifelong friendship. As we grew older, distance may have separated us, but it never diminished our friendship. I always admired Kathy for her gentle heart, her quick wit and her absolute thirst for knowledge. I will miss talking to her, but I know she will always be with me.
Sending love and light to Nola and all of the Riley family.

Kathy was a dear one. She gave the best hugs and had the warmest, most genuine, kindest laugh of anyone I knew. She had an uncanny ability to make me feel more at home in my own house when she visited. We shared a love of nature, and I remember shadowing her when she was an Audubon naturalist visiting area preschools. Her gentle way with the children was so endearing and they warmed to her instantly. I loved running into her at The Reg to see movies... we seemed to like sitting in the same area of the house! And we also shared a deep and abiding love for a certain college biology professor. I will miss her.
