Obituary of Donald S. Conway
Goin' Home. Donald Stephen Conway, 93, son of Catherine Burgess Conway and John Patrick Conway, was called home to his final resting place in Heaven on February 13, 2022. A son of Irish natives, he was proud of his Gaelic heritage.
In his earliest years, New York City was home for Don. He was born on December 28, 1928, on the upper west side of Manhattan. Soon after, his family moved to The Bronx where Don and his three siblings were raised. After serving his country in the United States Army, Don earned a B.A. in English from Fordham University. Education then became his life.
Don began his early teaching career in Rochester, New York at McQuaid Jesuit High School. At The Ancient Order of Hibernians, he met his love, Carol Haggerty Conway. Together they made their first home bringing three new lives into the world. Don extended his formal education at the University of Rochester where he earned an M.S. in Educational Administration. He worked as an English Teacher and Assistant Principal in the Penfield Central School District. Rochester was home for a decade.
Life soon conveyed the Conway family to Jamestown, New York, where Don worked as High School Principal in Falconer Central School District. The Conway family settled into their new home where they lived a rich and full life that included Don's sister Alice's family: the Joseph T. Minarovich Family. Don further advanced his formal education at The University of Buffalo and involved himself in various Educational and Community Organizations to include the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Jamestown was home for three decades.
Retirement brought Don and Carol to their next home in Viera Florida for two decades of sunshine. Don left his most recent home in Virginia Beach, Virginia for his final resting place in Heaven. Don's journey home was peaceful with Carol, Noreen, Mary Beth and John by his side. Sólás.
Surviving Don is his wife of 62 years: Carol Haggerty Conway, and his three children: Noreen Conway (Robert Raymond) of Washington, DC, Mary Beth Conway (Kenneth Dens) of Rochester, New York, and John Conway (Jennifer Rafferty) of Chesapeake, Virginia and six Grandchildren: Joshua, Kieran and Christopher Ryan Conway, Meghan and Ryan Dens and Tighe Raymond. Also surviving are his many cherished nieces and nephews who hold dear their "Uncle Donny".
Don is preceded in death by two sisters who were recently called home: Alice Conway Minarovich and Ann (Tootsie) Conway Ricchiuti. His brother, John (Joey) Conway, preceded him many years ago.
A Celtic Celebration of Life is planned for June 25, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church / Holy Apostles Parish in Jamestown, New York with a repast to follow the ceremony. Memorial contributions may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul / Holy Apostles Choir in Don's name, 508 Cherry St. Jamestown, NY 14701.
