We first met David as a student at Maple Grove, where he was always friendly, prepared and eager to learn. For several years later we had many interactions with the Bentley family, especially his brother Jim, & always thought they were the finest kind f people.
Out sincere sympathies at this sad time.

My thoughts and prayers are with David and his family. Dave was a co-worker for many years, and he was a man that truly loved his work and was very proud to be a Sheriff's Deputy. It has been a pleasure to work with the Bentley family in law enforcement all these years and especially Dave who has always been passionate about his role in law enforcement. You will be remembered and missed Dave............

I worked with Dave at the Sheriff’s Office for many years. I learned so much from him as did many officers with all of the agencies in Chautauqua County. He was a great LEO and a wonderful man. He will be missed by many.

My husband Lew & I both worked with Dave at the Sheriff's Office for many years. He was truly destined for Law enforcement and was top in his duties. My most favorite memory of Dave is an off-duty visit he made to the Pistol Permit Office many years ago - walking in grinning and carrying a baby carrier in each hand. As great an officer as he was, you could easily tell his first love was Kim and his children. He will be greatly missed by many. My deepest sympathy to the entire family. Denise M. Snyder

I first met Dave when we were assigned the same dorm room at Fredonia State. At that time there were 3 students assigned to one dorm room. That first semester is when Dave encouraged me to apply for a CETA work program with the Sheriff’s Office. That gave me the foot in the door for my career at the Sheriff’s Office. My sincere condolences go out to all of Dave’s family and friends. He will be missed by many. I am away on a family vacation and unable to attend his funeral service. Prayers to all of Dave’s family, coworkers, and friends. Bill Nelson

This seemed appropriate given Dave's years of faithful & excellent service to our community:
We Remember the Officers
We remember the officers who changed our lives,
The men and woman who protected us day and night,
People who respect for their dedication to the cause,
For when faced with danger, they never even pause.
We remember the officers who always stood true,
Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue,
With pride and integrity they say 'To serve and protect,'
For the giving of their life, we offer our respect.
We remember the officers who we never really knew,
Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few,
With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest,
There's more to these people than the badge on their chest.

Unfortunately we never had the pleasure of David's acquaintance. However we are long term friends of his in-laws Allen and Mary Peterson. We've also had the pleasure of knowing their granddaughter, David's daughter Kaitlyn, by way of the Peterson Farm stand during our visits back to Jamestown. Our hearts and condolences go out to them and the other members of the family.
Sincerely, Brian and Phyllis Samuelson

I worked with Dave for many years during my tenure as District Attorney. Also issued many search warrants upon his application, mostly in illegal drug investigations, while on the bench. Always professional and prepared when appearing before me. Also just a pleasant man to be with who had a wonderfully wry sense of humor.
He was a great guy and an exemplary dedicated officer who was respected and admired by many both in and outside of law enforcement. Count me among them.
Thanks for your service Dave.

David Bentley was not a giant amongst men --- david bentley was a GIANT AMONGST GIANTS. The honesty the compassion the raw goodness of this man will be more than missed. This giant went outta his way more than most will know to really make a difference. Chautauqua county was this man's home and he spent his entire life serving this community and all all its people I'm beyond greatful and humbled that I was honored to know this giant amongst giants and how he affected and changed my life for the better and how the world will shine just a little less brighter because this beautiful man no longer walks among us. Rest in peace my friend nobody deserves it more and thank you my captain.

I first met Dave nearly 50 years ago. He was a young teenager, and I was a rookie Deputy Sheriff working for Dave's father (who was the Sheriff of Chautauqua County at the time). Dave would often accompany his father during off-shift visits to the office at night and on the weekend. It was inevitable that he would become a law enforcement officer who would faithfully serve his community for decades. Later in life, I had the pleasure of working with Dave on numerous occasions during his tenure as an Investigator with the Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force. He loved the tactical side of that work (breaching entries, executing search warrants and effecting arrests). He was both skillful and brave. We maintained contact with each other over the years and I was able to follow his career as he progressed through the ranks. He worked very hard for and deservedly earned each promotion.
My heart goes out to the Bentley family, all of Dave's wonderful friends along with his co-workers and law enforcement associates. His dedication to duty and personal sacrifices will not soon be forgotten. I will always remember Dave with the highest regard.

As a non-resident of Chautauqua County I’ve been around every year , to see and hear great things David had been doing around the region I’ve always called the man behind the badge, angels of light to uphold the law. We do appreciate his many services to the communities.
What a Hero He was to his family, to his co-workers to his friends and to his classmates. Condolences from us all; the class of 77
